siri veland phd thesis Since the first generation of SSDs OCZ has been at the cutting edge of the market, continually releasing drives based on the latest controllers and technology. Some of the real highlights over time have been their RevoDrive models. A set of drives that offered performance well in excess of the limits that standard SATA drives have. The most recent model in that family was released in April 2014 and we’ve been looking forward to the follow-up ever since. OCZ recently launched the new drive and today we get the chance to test it in our OCZ RD400 SSD Review.

A box which gives us a clear view of the drive, a couple of product leaflets inside and a single bundled item, a half height PCIe bracket for us to use in low profile cases. The drive itself is encased in plastic to ensure it arrives safely.

One version is the standard M.2 card, the other is shown above and includes a PCIe card which allows anyone without an M.2 slot in their system to take advantage of the enhanced performance the drive offers. The drive works with Microsofts bundled driver however OCZ/Toshiba suggest we install their branded driver for maximum performance.

OCZ RD400 SSD Review – Conclusion

Since testing our first M.2 and NVMe drives we have always been impressed by the performance available. With the RD400 the trend continues and immediately we are off to a good start with a decent level of build quality. Basing the drive around Toshiba parts was always going to be a good thing, they have a proven track record of high-quality components and very stable, reliable SSDs. We also like that two versions of the drive will be available, allowing consumers with and without M.2 slots to take advantage of the product.

As far as the bundle goes, quite simple overall. Flexibility is always good, so the alternate bracket is a nice and the SSD Utility software continues to work well. We’ve seen it on previous OCZ models and it is feature packed and easy to use. Exactly what we need from an app for SSDs.

Looking at performance, the drive exceeded the advertised speeds of 2600/1600MB/s which is always great to see. In terms of those peak speeds, there are one or two faster drives available however as we worked through the various tests it became clear that the RD400 compared well in actual use. The HD video benchmark was a particular highlight and file copy operations were also particularly fast.

Summary: A high-quality SSD which offers excellent performance. Just like the RevoDrive models before it, the RD400 sits at the top of the storage market offering a no compromise solution for this generation.
