Gskill KM780 RGB Review (Keyboard)

G.SKILL are well known for their high-quality memory, something we have used for years in our main benchmarking system. A particular highlight was their Golden Dragon range. Great looking sticks with excellent performance. Recently they started to branch out into gaming peripherals and one of those is the focus of our review today. Welcome to our Gskill KM780 RGB Review (Keyboard).

Gskill KM780 RGB Review (Keyboard) – Packaging and Bundle

The G.SKILL KM780 arrives in a large box which offers a good clear view of the product on the front. There are plenty of features listed and inside the board is protected by a plastic bag and various cardboard sections. Bundled with the keyboard we get some product documentation, soft touch wrist rest and a set of replacement keys which can replace our main left-hand buttons so that they are easier to finds by feel.

Gskill KM780 RGB Review (Keyboard) – The Board

The design of the KM780 certainly stands out due to the brushed aluminium finish with bar running around the edge. In terms of size it is 518 x 172 x 48 mm ( w/ Palm Rest 518 x 228 x 48 mm) and the weight is 1.36KG (1.54kg with rest). Various models are available from G.SKILL and ours is the RGB model with Cherry MX Red switches (2mm actuation, 50m keystroke lifespan). Each of the switches is LED backlit and the board features Anti-Ghosting with full n-Key Rollover.

Over on the left edge of the board we find a set of six “G” keys which are primarily designed for our macro functionality. Moving to the top edge we find three profile buttons and config keys. Next to them are buttons for Windows key lock, brightness (3 levels) and timer. Over on the right are the media buttons, volume wheel, and a LED panel which lets us know what the volume level is.

Round at the back of the board is a wiring clamp for our mouse cable and some connectivity in the form of USB and 3.5mm audio passthrough.

Flipping the board over we find a number of rubber areas which help keep the board stable on our desk and there are two feet at the back which allow us to change the angle of the board if required. At the end of a braided cable we find gold plated connectors for USB passthrough, keyboard and audio.

Gskill KM780 RGB Review (Keyboard) – Software

The software offered by G.SKILL allows us to configure the board to our liking as well as upgrade firmware as new versions are released. Key functionality within the software is the ability to re-assign keys, create macros and configure out lighting with 16.8million colours available.

Gskill KM780 RGB Review (Keyboard) – Conclusion

Starting with the build quality of the KM780 we have a board which impresses from the moment it is unboxed. Initially, we felt it was a bit retro in its design, and not in a good way, however sitting with it for a while we’d lean towards it being an industrial design. It’s good to see the presence of gold plated connectors and braided cable, all nice little touches which lean towards this being a decent quality board. Of course,¬†the keys are important to a gaming board and we can have no complaints about the use of Cherry MX parts. They are after all industry leading.

In terms of typing experience, the Red switches are of course excellent. Fast, responsive and a good level of resistance. We noted no issues with the passthrough functionality in our day to day use and the LED’s were bright across the board. On the software front, the panel is decent. It is a little rough around the edges as far as the text goes but it does offer a decent level of functionality and is responsive. We would, however, like to see G.SKILL turn this into a universal panel which controls all of their devices.

Summary: Well built, high-quality keys and lighting. An impressive gaming keyboard.
