surround in big room concerne

hi,

i am wondering what would be the best setup for a large room keeping in mind that i will not use a theatre like surrounding (with lots of delay and reverb), and also that my bass is routed not passing trough the surrounder, but seperately. 5.1... 6.1... 8.1..... My main concern is the loss of sound cause by a wrong setup.
