Try this player for AC3

I never got power dvd to do anything with surround sound, so i think it sucks.

Try this free player it can play avi that have AC3 and it works.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ remember to set the audio to 5.1 in the player

works on my sb 5.1 platinum with kxdrivers.

I noticed that Media Player Classic (a good freeware media player bundled with Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative, but also available on its own on sourceforge.net) can also play DVDs, and I think you can set it to use either a built-in AC3 decoder or an external one like AC3 Filter.
