I lost my hardware directsound after card reinstall

I took out my card for a while, and ran the onboard soundcard.
Then when I put it back again I lost hardware directsound and EAX in GTA:VC.
I have tried reinstalling both GTA and KXdrivers.
Dsound seems to work in other games but I don't know how to check.
In GTA, the music and other sound works, but the motor sound, brake sound and sword swing sounds etc. are mute.
I have DS acceleration enables full in dxdiag.
What's wrong?

Err not sure I understand all you said but I have disabled the onboard soundcard, not that it should make any difference.
