Yes it is that time of the year again!

With barely a month before the end of the year it is time us gamers take a look at what these past 11 months brought us. Like almost every year there were plenty of good games released, but the sheer amount and diversity baffled even veterans.

Whether you are into first person shooters, action adventures or simply strategies, you had your fair share of gaming brilliance moments this year. There were so many great titles in fact, that we are afraid next year will end up being a disappointment when compared to 2007. But let us not worry about that right now. Instead, let’s focus on determining which the best games in each genre were.

WIN PRIZES AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE READERS GOTY

Before you start crying foul because your favorite 2007 game is not listed, please remember that even here at Gaming Heaven we are only humans, so we make mistakes. To rectify this, we will give you, the readers a chance to make up your own GOTY list.

There once was an advanced alien species known as the Eloh. They freely shared the knowledge of Logos, the power to convert between matter and energy with just the mind, to less advanced races. One of these less advanced races, the Thrax, used this power to wage war against the Eloh, a war that was won at great cost by the Eloh. This led to a great divide in the Eloh. One faction wanted to keep on spreading the knowledge as they had before. The other, called the Neph, sought to control the development of "lesser races" as to ensure they, the Neph, would always be the superior species. This inner conflict led the Neph faction to leave the Eloh and seek other allies, among them the defeated Thrax, this species along with others joined to form the Bane, which now exists under the control of the Neph.

Rules

The rules of engagement are pretty simple. We selected 7-8 candidates for each genre, going by our review scores and the general public opinion. It is now up to you to decide which amongst these titles are the best in their category. You all get one vote (don’t forget to register if you haven’t done so already) per genre. Once we have a winner in each genre we will pit them all off in a final Gaming Heaven GOTY 2007 poll, which will determine what game was the absolute best.

SPORTS GAME OF THE YEAR

There is a myth going around that gamers don’t like sports. That of course isn’t true. Some of us might prefer to stay indoors, playing our favorite game, but that doesn’t mean that that very game isn’t sports related. 2007 gave us all of the classic games polished to an amazing degree, but also games that pushed the boundaries forward, like Skate! or Mario Strikers: Charged. Now if only playing games would burn calories as well…

Skate

(Xbox 360, PS3)

If there is one thing we thought was impossible is making a better skating game than one of the Tony Hawk titles. Well, we were not only proven wrong, but actually got a skating game that revolutionized the genre. Amazing graphics, addicting gameplay and painfully realistic falls – Skate has it all.

NHL 08

(Xbox 360, PS3)

Some might argue that NHL games haven’t changed at all in the last few years. Well, that is true for the old-gen representatives, but the next-game version of the game simply blew fans away. With a very realistic and strategic approach to hockey plus some amazing looks, NHL 08 for next-gen consoles moves the bar a bit higher.

Mario Strikers Charged

(Wii)

If you thought the only sport Mario was interested in was racing, you were wrong. This crossbreed between football, fighting and platforming might seem like a bit too much, but when you start scoring goals against Bowser, you’ll only care about preventing him from doing the same to you.

NBA 2K8

(Xbox 360, PS3)

NBA 2K8 looked amazing last year, but due to the switch to next-gen some of the polish we came to expect from the series was lacking. This isn’t the case this year, as the authors delivered all the features of previous games wrapped in a next-gen look.

Madden NFL 08

(Xbox 360, PS3)

EA might hold the exclusive rights to NFL games, but going by this year’s Madden that is actually a good thing. Like with the rest of their lineup, the new Madden offers unparalleled graphics, engaging gameplay and all of the official teams, players (and sponsors). If you are into NFL, this is the game for you.

NBA Street Homecourt

(Xbox 360, PS3)

Homecourt might not be the most realistic basketball simulation out there, but who cares when you can slam and dunk by jumping 20 feet into the air, doing a pirouette midway and a colorful victory dance after scoring.

Vote HERE

FIFA Soccer 08

(Xbox 360, PS3)

Same old, same old? Yes and no. The next generation version of Fifa looks amazing considering the amount of players on (and off) the field. But most importantly, the game has shifted towards a more realistic depiction of football, so it will take all your concentration to score that winning goal.

Vote HERE

Virtua Tennis 3

(PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

It might not be completely realistic, but it sure as hell gets you hooked on it pretty quickly. From tournaments over friendly games to the plethora of mini-games available, Virtua Tennis 3 will keep you occupied for quite a while.
