Help me set up my AIW X800XL
I would like to set up my video drivers with only the following (see sig for other hardware):
1) Omega drivers 2) TV Tuner 3) Guide Plus I can use the ATI cat-uninstaller, then use the install CD and choose a "custom" install, but I don't know which options to choose. Any ideas? Also, what do these choices mean? I understand all the others. 1) WDM integrated drivers 2) ATI control center (not ccc) 3) ATI Decoder 4) Author Script One last question: Should I use the install CD, then install the Omega drivers over the ones on from the install CD?

Best thing to do really, so you can gain experience and familiarity with the software, is to clean your system of any previous video card installation. Then set your computer display adaptor to Standard VGA and shut it down. Unplug the computer, install your new card, and use the CD that came with the card to install the software in Express mode. That should (!) give you all the functionality the card can provide as a start - and get you used to the menus, control panels, audio setup, and so forth - before you attempt to change, update, or alter the software. That method is also what ATI has tested most thoroughly.
From experience, that installation method for a new card works best. Problems often arise when folks try to update or change to a modded driver, or substitute control panels, or add overclocking/features utilities without knowing how it was supposed to work altogether in the first place. Get familiar with the card and the manufacturer's software, and their preferred software installation procedures, first (if you haven't already) - you'll learn a lot from that - then go for modded drivers and modified installation methods. The WDM stands for Windows Driver Model - it allows a particular piece of hardware to work properly with Windows operating system software components. ATI Control Center is the ATI software utility used to select the options and setting for use within Windows, games, for displays, etc... The MMC is also a Control Center of sorts, but for the TV/Video portion of the card. The ATI Decoder I'm not altogether sure of - but think that it takes the data stream from the TV portion of the card and translates it to data that the video card portion can display properly on the screen. Again, I would start by using the original installation CD as mentioned above. In order to use the Omegadrivers, as an example, you would need to uninstall the video driver and control panel before using his set - the video driver works the same (but internal settings have been modified/adjusted) but the control panel/utilities he provides with his set are different than ATI's originals.

I didn't mention it in my original post, but I actually did that. I have had this new system up and running since early January. I know I do not need the CCC and MMC, as I have other programs that function as well as, or better than, these. If I get rid of them, that's that much less overhead on my system.
So, it sounds like I need WDM and ATI Decoder, correct? Also, what is Author Script?

About AuthorScript: I did a search and found that it is software that ATI licensed from Sonic Solutions to enable easy authoring of DVDs and CDs from within the MMC software. Link to a press announcement (dated Jan. '04) here:
Sonic You would need the WDM (read other posts in this forum about which one to choose though - there can be issues with functionality based upon which version of the WDM you install - and how to install it...), but your other software might (? - not sure...) give you what the ATI Decoder provides. H3X4D3C1M4L has a good deal of experience here in the forums and in using the software on his own AIW, as does Judas, and others - maybe they'll chime in on this thread... I'm using an older PCI Wonder card with my 9600xt (so not an AIW) so I can't comment with precision on the exact software components you would be using.

And here he is!
My advice, this usually works best.. 1. Don't use the install CD its out of date by now. 2. Don't bother with Omega's unless you specifically NEED to run that for whatever reason 3. Download the stock Catalysts and install them in their entirety. 4. Download the DVD Decoder and install that 5. Download the MMC and install whatever you want/need from that 6. Install the Remote Wonder The rest, TBH, isn't needed. Guide Plus just install off the CD from the directory it comes in don't use the main ATI installer |
