Pissed Radeon AIW 8500DV & Dual Processors

Using a MATCHED pair of PIII-S 1.4's on a Gigabyte GA-6VTXD (VIAAAHHHH 133T) I cannot use the TV component - It simply falls over when run. All other MMC 7.7 components work (except TV & capturing).

Setup: Hercules 3D Prophet AIW Radeon 8500DV on Cat 2.5 with matching capture drivers. Is there an issue with MMC 7x & SMP or is it the 8500DV on the Via based board @ AGPx4?

Ran with onboard sound (no S/C) and with Audigy 1 Platinum (O/B sound disabled)

This WEIRDNESS is after a clean XP Pro install (with & without SP1 & the VIA 4-In-1 update)

I have tried different aperture sizes (64, 128 & 256)
DITTO AGP driving values, Cas timing, etc

System benches slower (WHEN WORKING) than comparable systems using PIII 1GHz & PIII-S 1.4GHz
Games crash regularly - upon reboot - get 'recovered from serious error, Radeon causing instability'

gaming snags have been ironed out though!!! still on the same driverset

Is this particular to the AIW8500DV (64)?

WHO has success with SMP/VIA/ AIW8500DV (64)?

Are there issues with ATI's MMC in SMP condition?

System is stable otherwise BUT need to resolve the NO TV issue?

Will try a plain vanilla AIW Radeon 32Mb DDR to rule out the AIW8500DV (64)
If the above works - anyone want a cheap AIW8500DV as gaming is not the number one use?

I have found that you have to run the MMC install and tell it to repair after installing new drivers. Make sure you have the WDM's installed first. Personally, I have never had problem with the TV not working, it is usually the capture and TV-on-demand functions that quit after a driver change. Running the MMC install and saying repair usually fixes it.

We have 2 other PC's in the house that run a 8500dv and that is the only solution I have ever come up with. That's why you don't see it listed in MY sig.

But none of them are in a dual CPU situation either......

Rayder has it right. I have had this problem often when upgrading drivers. Either the capture driver fails or once or twice the tv program fails. Once I had to delete all entries in the registry and start from scratch.

I Probably would be your best help.

Here are my system specs:
Antec sx-1030B
Antec PP-510D Power Supply
Tyan Thunder K7 S2462 -NG
2 AMD Athlon MP 1900+ (1.6 ghz)
ATI ALL IN WONDER RADEON 8500 DV
2 sticks of Crucial REG ECC 2100 256MB Memory (512 total)
2 sticks of Corsair REG ECC 2100 256MB Memory (512 total)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Promise Raid TX2000 ATA 133
2 40 GB Hard drives Maxtor diamond max plus 7200RPM (boot and backup)
2 60 GB Hard drives Maxtor diamond max plus 7200RPM (120-112GB Running raid 0)
Toshiba 16x dvd 1612
Plextor 24/12/40 black
Sony 3.5 Black floppy
All Vantec Cables to fit 3 18 2 24 (Floppy and dvd/cd drives)
2 Thermaltake 6CU+ 7000RPM
Cyber Cooler INC SC-180 System blower for videocard and soundcard heat
Ambient (Intel) V.90 hardware modem
Windows XP Professional with service pack1 and Directx 9.0

I have been running this system ever since ATi released the ATi All-in-Wonder 8500DV card to Newegg.com.

The Best driver set that can be run with the card is Catalyst 2.3. I have tried the later versions with no luck with the tv end.

I may sometimes start my computer and I will have no tv which is an issue with McAfee Version 7.0 and I just have to restart and the problem is fixed. I would get a black screen with grey line blinking on the screen. Which means that the Wdm driver has a problem in the registry, I restart and it fixes it. Happens about once a month. Never run configuration check because it messes up the registry for the wdm drivers and does the same thing.

I would also switch to a Turtle beach Santa Cruz because I tried the Audigy 1 and the driver were so horrible it would crack and pop all over the place.

Just use Catalyst 2.3 and you will be fine until something else comes out.

later

Thumbs Up!

re: Radeon AIW 8500DV & Dual Processors

Thanks guys! - all good advice. Now able to view TV & capture with MMC

Ran into these along the way

1. Reinstalling MMC after completely removing it - worked

2. VIA chipsets sometimes cause your AGP to run at x2 (running it at x4 causes lock-ups)

3. VIA chipsets are sometimes the cause of dropped frames (never more than <1% with i815e)

4. Audigy & MMC = hassle (even with the latest drivers) - AC97 & MMC = working TV on demand!!!
(as much as I like Audigy - time to purchase an alternative or return to SB Live 5.1 Platinum)

5. MMC does work in dual processor condition - but the problems with MMC are still there.

The above may appear to be generalisations, but having run Ali, Intel & SIS based motherboards - I thought I had seen the back of dropped frames during capture (then I revisited VIA).
