Getting PWN'd by ATI 8500dv + Cable Box

Hey all,

I'm running an ATI 8500dv, with a Time Warner Cable box. I just installed the newest recommended driver/software combo (catalyst + mmc) that is on the ATI/AMD website (The TV portion of MMC says 9.14). All that I'm trying to do is to run the cable signal to my 8500dv, so that I can simply watch tv....one would think that this wouldn't be so hard....

I've tried running coax to the video card, as well as composite cables to the dongle. I get 'no signal' with the straight coax connection from the cable box to the coax input on the video card. When I run the composite cables to the dongle, I do get picture and sound output. However, the picture is defaulted to 'live' mode constantly, which makes it skip and stutter. The audio is defaulted to a very low volume level, which is very annoying. I've tried the regedit fix for the live mode functionality, which did not work.

I guess this is really just aggravating because 4 years ago I had the signal coming from a cable box to the same exact setup that I'm using now and everything worked great. The only difference is that I had an older version of the catalyst driver/multimedia center combination. I can't understand why I'm having such a hard time with the 'latest and greatest' drivers, as opposed to the full functionality I had in the past. I've scoured the internet for previous versions of MMC, but can only find old catalyst driver setups.

If anyone can point me in the right direction with this, whether its resolving issues with the current CAT/MMC setup, or past CAT/MMC combos that are more stable and simply work (and download-able), that would be great. Thanks!

Chris

Because the latest and greatest drivers basically made the tv capabilities non excistant...

i'm sorry but your best solution is to keep using those same old drivers.. if everything was working great with them, keep them. This is the unfortunate case of the ATI cards today as far as i know ati had to implement restrictions and whatnot that made their hardware basically inoperatable. It's really unfortuneate as the AIW and capabilties of these cards when they were initially released were amazing and very capable and friendly to use with little to no issues.

Re: Getting PWN'd by ATI 8500dv + Cable Box

OK. So the consensus is that I go back a few drivers, but keep the current version of MMC? (going through and eliminating any traces of ATI files on reinstall, of course) I thought that the Catalyst driver version and the MMC version has to somewhat match date wise? If I go back a few catalyst driver versions, will the newest MMC version still have that defaulted 'live' function for watching tv 'on demand'? Will it change the way MMC functions on the whole?

I appreciate the replies I received, and I'm hoping that they elude to the following: If I go back and install catalyst driver 7.x, as well as the current version of multimedia center on top of it, I should get different functionality out of MMC.

I can't find old versions of MMC anywhere on the net. I can find older versions of Catalyst drivers though. Thanks for helping me with this.

Re: Getting PWN'd by ATI 8500dv + Cable Box

I replied over at the Rage3d site. Basically there are TWO Regedits. I don't have the path available to me this second if you cant' find it on these sires or through google. The ATI Reg edit doesn't work after version MMC 9.13 I believe but the other reg edit does.

Also finding the MMC maybe you can track one down on P2P sites....possibly you could post something in your local Craigslist or ??? to borrow a CD with MMC 9.08 and below and paired with Catalyst 6.2 or below.

Yes, to be more clear. Your best bet is to clean out everything with Something like Driver Cleaner Pro after you've used Windows/Ati's so called uninstaller. Otherwise your going to have conflicts as you alluded to between digital and analog drivers.
You are going to get your best results from Catalyst Drivers of Version 6.2 and before paired with MMC 9.08 and before. (most consider MMC 9.06 and MMC 9.06.1 to be better than 9.08 especially if you use the TV Guide set up for recordings.

Maybe someone can post you MMC software, maybe if you email ATI they can give you a download link that isn't public, you could shell out the $21 to have a disc shipped from them.
If you have any friends or computer shops etc that you could beg/borrow a ATI install CD with some version of Catalyst and MMC that you can use.
Some ordinary ATI cards also had MMC on them.
