AIW 9600-Is mine faulty

I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway.....
I'm trying to set up a PC for vhs capture and using an old ATI AIW 9600 pro in an fresh XP install, I know it's old but this has been suggested as an ideal set up for my purposes, but I'm getting random pixels and lines at the BIOS post screen and pixels missing from screen icons once XP is running, it has also sent the display black when trying to install the Catalyst software.
Is this card damaged or faulty or is a question of getting the installation right? Are there any diagnostic utilities about
I've installed it on a MSI ms-6728 neo2 board, but also in a Dell Optiplex GX270 with similar effects

Any ideas appreciated.

Sounds to me like a dying card.

That's what I was thinking.
I can assume that to have display artifacts at the bios post screen is not normal?
The card is running at 4x as I can't seem to set the voltage to 0.8V in the bios to run it at x8, could this be a causing the problem?
I'm mainly used to PC's with built in graphics hence the stupid questions.

Re: AIW 9600-Is mine faulty

Running it at 4x or 8x won't make any real difference anyway. If it starts to artifact at once on startup it's a sign that it's dying and it's not only due to heat.

Of course it could be ram as well but replacing ram on such an old card will end up costing more than getting a new card so...

naw.. i wasn't referring to the ram on the card... the ram you slip into the slots on the motherboard..

bad physical memory can translate into corrupt graphics as well... i've seen it.

Interesting, I'll try swapping out the RAM.
