Library won't show files

When I record something and try to add it to the library it doesn't work. The only thing I can get is TV On Demand recordings, (and they play back). When I manually locate my mpegs and drag them into the library I am promted to choose to add it to the library. I click yes and nothing happens. It seems though, that the file markers are there, but they are zero size files. I will accept that people will suggest I am searching wrong, and maybe I am, but that doesn't explain why drag and drop won't work. What's up with this?
