Hey folks..

I'm going to be installing one of these for the first time. Do any of you have any advice for me?

the AIW's need a lot of different install files, get them all beforehand:

- either - the full ATI driver package (display + control panel + WDM/capture)
- or - Omega's driver (display + CP) and the ATI WDM/capture drivers
(or whatever 3rd party driver you like)

- also -
DAO/MDAC package
ATI CD verifier / DVD-decoder downloader
ATI Multimedia Center (TV, DVD, etc installer)
Remote Wonder driver

also needed for the MMC are:
DirectX 9 (prob will have installed it before all these anyway)
Windows Media Encoder 9

Of course with a new card, I'd suggest a reformat to start with.
OK, now here's the routine:
  1. install the ATI driver package, all 3 options (display, CP, WDM), reboot
(or WDM drivers, do not reboot, then Omegas driver + CP, now reboot)
  2. now's the time to make sure you have DX9 and WMEncoder9 installed, need them there before the rest
  3. install the DAO/MDAC package
  4. run the CD-Wiz app, insert original ATI CD, download and install DVD-decoder
  5. install the MMC
  6. install the Remote Wonder driver
  7. install GuidePlus from the CD, if desired
that should be about it. if you don't want to install ATI's DVD player (will use WinDVD or some other player), you don't need the DVD-decoder. if you don't need the MMC at all, you can skip the WMEncoder and DAO/MDAC also. oh and do yourself a favor and make sure your sound card drivers are installed before MMC, since the TV needs them.
I think that's it, maybe someone can come up with some other advice. anyway, enjoy!

EDIT: fixed to WDM then Omega, but it might not matter

Be very careful of the pins used to secure the output dongle.
Do NOT use a screwdriver to tighten them (although there is a screwdriver slot - don't use it)
When it seems that they're pretty snug but they could in a little further...don't even try.
Just let it go.
I've broken about 12 of those little pins!

I was wondering about that. I only finger-tightened mine and they still seem to have room to go further. But, I figured they only need to go in far enough to give the connection some stability, so I stopped once I felt that was good.

It's nice to know I did something else right in my life.

Too late I did end up breaking one but found a replacement.

Ummm..no.
The AIW 9600 series doesn't have DVI. It's a simple pin to pin connection. It converts the AIW 8500DV-like connector to two vga connectors, RCA out, spdif out, and 1/8" minijack out. It's necessary to use the card.

Mine broke and I called ATI - they sent me a free replacement. You can do the same.
