ATI MMC Install Problems

I just bought an ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 tuner today and the install went fine until ATI's MMC tried to install. No matter what I do I seem to always get the following error:

Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040705
Description: String accessed out of bounds
Setup will now terminate.

Has anyone seen this before or know what to do?

Looks like a software conflict...

I read at ATI's site that their setup and install program likes Windows XP SP2 - what OS and version you using?

I'm running Windows XP Home and I upgraded to SP2 last night based on ATI's website. No matter what I do the error continues. I've even tried install old versions of the MMC with no luck.

Darn,

This may sound dumb, but I gotta ask (no such thing as a dumb question...), you do have this hooked up to a USB 2.0 port, for sure? Just covering the basics...

Maybe Vampyromaniac will chime in here too with his experience as well, patience...

Yes. The tuner drivers installed fine, it's the Multimedia Center install thats crashing.

Last dumb question, maybe...

Are you trying to use the version of the MMC from the install CD that came with the unit, or a downloaded version - and do you have the Media Encoder 9 from Microsoft installed?

I tried installing all 3 parts from both the CD and ATI's website, and yes I do have the media encoder installed.

Ok,

Can't stick with you tonite on this one (gotta work late at the WD store), but it sounds like you've got your basics covered.

Shot in the dark, a hunch - conflict with sound card? Try latest chipset drivers, check, then removing sound card and software, then before re-installing the sound stuff, try the MMC stuff first.

Good luck, maybe someone else will have ideas this evening - things tend to pick up here at night...

I have a feeling it won't help, but try updating the USB drivers from the motherboard manufacturer or chipset manufacturer just to be sure.

I'm really convinced that the problem is strictly software related. The install for the Multimedia Center crashes right after unpacking the install files. I've done a few searches and have run into a few other cases of the same problem occuring except on different programs. So I think there is some problem with the installer and some specific issue with my setup. One thing that a few other places has mentioned was oleaut32.dll. I've tried restoring the file to older and newer versions with no luck. I'm really stumped.

Good morning,

Yeah, I think so too...

Something fundamental with your setup is likely causing the problem.

Sometimes there is no substitute for the brute force method, wipe and rebuild, but maybe the sound driver thing will be enough. Again, that is just a hunch - but a likely one anyway...

I wonder if it has to do with your .NET version? I thought I read on ATI's website that some of their newer drivers require .NET. Maybe hit windowsupdate.microsoft.com and see if it finds any updates you need. Is Antivirus turned off? Just some things to try. Also, how about earlier version of MMC? Good luck.

Don't for the love of all things "good quality" install the 9.06MMC

Stick with the 9.03 or 9.02
