I have a friend /w this card & a Viewsonic LCD.
The problem is as most users know when you first boot your computer up this card it appears kind distorted on screen. However, once you enter windows it clears up. The problem my friend is this is happening more, and more in windows. It just comes and goes. All updates installed, but not the most recent drivers. I think my friend is running 5.2 cats. Does any one know how to fix this? I'm trying to get an actual of picture of what it looks like. |

LCD's dont have refresh rates..... so that wont matter
Is cleartype turned on and is the monitor itself calibrated? IT could also be that you're using an analog (15 pin) port rather than a DVI-I port. Check out all that stuff |

I've been meaning to get back to this.
We've changed the refresh rate a few times to no avail. It could simply be an issue /w this particular LCD & card. I know the LCD works fine /w an analog signal though. I really need to get a CRT there, and run that for awhile to see if it does it. |

If it works fine with an analog signal, there are 2 possibilities:
1. The digital image processor is messed, and that is placed on the core of ATI cards so overclocking *may* have something to do with that 2. The digital cable is bad. If it works fine on an analog signal, the degredation in quality would not be outweighed by it actually working, would it? |

My friend's card only has the analog out on it. So that is all that's even been used. I used to own the LCD, and never had any problems /w the analog or digital input. I think either it's some grounding issue /w the cables or the card itself is going bad.

Grounding wouldn't cause that much of an issue unless the power was really dirty.
Tried a power filter? |

I don't mean grounding with power but with actual video cable itself. There maybe some interference getting through. However, I really don't think that is truly the case since.

A power filter may help though. Helped my CRT using a DVI-I cable alot.

My friend is going to get an extra CRT from her family, and see how it does.

It should do fine if another monitor didn't have that problem, meaning its either the monitor itself or the cable for that monitor.
Doubt its the card....the card would show other signs of damage if it was that, and blurring text is more a monitor issue....if the card was dying it would show artifacts and such I think. |

I'm tending to lean towards the monitor quite a bit myself. The LCD is about 3 and half years old. Talking with my friend further normally it's fine but it's mainly when she reboots and/or boots up cold. After a hour or so it goes back to normal, but she has to switch refresh rates a couple times to make sure it will work.

Switching refresh rates shouldn't have an effect because as I'm sure you know....LCD's don't "refresh:....if thats the case then its likely the cable transmitting a "false" signal....changing the refresh rate only gives the monitor a different signal but should not have an effect on the image

Hmm I can change the refresh rate on my LCD. The thing is I'm wondering if the "dongle" for the card isn't causing it?

I know you can change it but that doesn't physically affect the monitor in anyway, just the signal thats delivered to it.
The dongle doesn't cause problems in my experience but why would you need it? You should be using a DVI-I cable for the digital signal it provides, because LCD's are digital and digital signals are far better on them

The dongle I'm talking about is that black cable. I'm just wondering with it getting moved around, if it's not the monitor that might be the issue. You'll see it only has the dual analog connection. |

Taking a screen shot would be a good idea though because it takes it from the display buffer, so if that image has a problem you know its the card.
