9800 PRO AIW Problems =(

Not last Christmas, but the Christmas before that I built my computer and it ran greeatt. My card gave me no problems and everything worked fine. However, up until two days ago my video card was a piece of trash; I couldnt get through 5 minutes of a game without it crashing.I had all the latest driver and everything so I decided to wipe my harddrive and start over. I installed the latest drivers (catalyst 5.6 and MMC 9.08), windows XP SP2, updated my AGP firmware and bios, and I still get problems...However, my videogame problems were fixed! No more crashing at random every 5 minutes..but, now my ATI TV gives me a delay in video so I cant play my ps2 now =( I tried every combination of drivers there is (yep, my day was gone yesterday) and still there is always a delay in video. ATI has the worst customer support ever, so I'm counting on you guys...

My specs:
Pentium 2.8 Ghz (XP SP2, no hyperthreading)
ASUS P4S800 mobo (AGP up-to-date)
1024 MB RAM
ATI 9800 PRO AIW (catalyst 5.6, MMC 9.08)

I know sometimes when you format your computer you think you're doing everything right.. but Im going to give you a link that well help.. or maybe not, with the proper way to install your programs onto your computer. http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm
It's some good reading and it might be able to help with doing some things that you might not have thought of, I use to have similar stuff go wrong with my computer but with that article and some research I did the things it mentioned and my computer runs great, its fast, and is solid for reliability. Just a side note.. If you use a anti-virus or firewall software program it will sometimes bog your computer down.. also make sure you don't have something in the background thats stealing your resources. Good Luck

Thanks for the link, but thats really not the problem; its an issue with the video card itself. Its not transmitting the video fast enough to display on screen, there is always a delay. This started also happened before I formatted the computer when i installed the latest drivers, but then I downgraded and everything was fine. However, I tried using the video drivers I used before and still wont work. Thanks for the help though...and btw, im running no anti-virus programs or anything, my computer itself runs great.

Have you tried playin around with Displays > Troubleshooting > Display Troubleshooting?
Theres 2 different modes 720p and 1080i mode.. might fix your problem and just curious is your wmv accelerator on? maybe try on and off and see what happens.

well what driver version are you using for you AIW 9800? and the wmv accelerator option is in your Display > Settings > Advanced > Options Menu, it will be at the very top, and the 720p and 1080i are in Display > Settings > Advanced > Displays > Monitor Tab > Troubleshoot. Hope this helps let me know if it works and if it doesn't then maybe we can see if there's something else that will fix this problem!

Also here's a great guide and troubleshooting site for Ati cards.
http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_12.html very useful and this link is taking you straight to the troubleshooting issues if you scroll down there seems to be a paragraph that might be something that will help.

Have you tried just a regular display mode rather than an HDTV one?

hi im having almost the exact same problem and i have installed the latest catalyst drivers and ATI MMC 9.08. I couldnt seem to get to the wmv accelerator settings, could you help me out here? and i was wondering if the 720p and 1080i is only for HDTV displays.
Another question, will the refresh rate affect the display? (im currently using 60hz)
many thanks,
JJL

WMV acceleration is in the CCC under the Video settings

Same Problem

I also have the 9800 AIW Pro and having the same problems. I have contacted ATI support and can't believe what kind of obstacles they put up to keep from fixing anything!! I have installed the latest drivers from ATI and using the CCC. I can't seem to find these wmv settings anywhere. I checked all the tabs in the CCC and nothing there remotely like what you're explaining. I'm wondering if you aren't referring to an install usings ATI's control panel. I'm wondering if anyone has fixed this problem yet...

The real issue here is how to get the TV display to run without crashing. Using the NSP drivers, the performance is terrible. Using the SP drivers, the performance is great except the system crashes after several minutes of viewing. I can't imagine my AIW 9800 being any different than anyone elses. This is an ATI retail model.

I currently have the ATI control panel and SP drivers drivers installed. TV works great but after about 10 minutes, the system freezes and I have to reboot. Yet, my ATI AIW Radeon works great on the same system. I can't make heads or tails of it.

It could just be the motherboard. Feeling like an upgrade?

An upgrade isn't the solution in this case but thanks for the offer.

Well it might be the solution. A New motherboard is an entirely different "battle field" for your hardware

That's why I now have an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe. That's the first thing I tried when I originally bought the 9800 and plugged it into an MSI NEO 2-FiS2R. So then, one may wonder if I should exchange the 9800. Well, I did. Returned it and bought a brand new one from a different vendor. Same problems. I've changed out the memory. I've tried it on vanila installs of WinXP. Personally, I think the problem is bad drivers not due to incompetence but due to a push force the update of hardware by ATI. The story is the same all over the internet. This card was kick ass for gaming (with bugs) but always had unresolved problems with the TV. ATI refuses to address the issue although they are very aware of it.

THats true though I can't say I've ever really had as many issues as most other people have.

Lucky I guess.

I found this to be the best solution to the lag you get when using MMC 9.08 with the newer drivers :

1. Copy these files, from WDM_SP to WDM_NSP and overwrite the orignals
ativmvxx.ax
ativtmxx.dll
ativmc20.cod
atinrvxx.SYS

2. Delete atinevxx.sys in WDM_NSP.

3. Rename
atinrvxx.sys to atinevxx.sys

4. Start the setup.

Regards

Andrew

Andrew - Thanks for the post. I tried your method on 2 differently configured systems. In both cases, the lag increased instead of decreasing. It's interesting how it would work for you and not me.

So far, the only thing which has come close to working is to update the NSP drivers using the SP drivers. This removes all issues, lag and sync, but creates a new one. When running the TV in a window, the system will crash (hang) after about 10 minutes or so. A reboot is needed.

As always, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My solution was simply to uninstall MMC 9.08 with the regular windows uninstaller and install MMC 9.06.1 instead. Works fine now, and I also managed to keep my tv channels set as well (which has not always been the case when up/downgrading MMC:s...)

At some point, I will probably try that on my system but I've come across yet another solution. I have to give all the credit to the people which have posted to this message board for it though. This is what I did.

1. Download & Install latest Omega Drivers & Reboot- http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=14t&dwn_cat_id=14

2. Download & Extract latest ATI WDM drivers. Update each one of the ATI drivers in the sound, video and game controllers branch in device manager by pointing it to the folder extracted WDM folder which contains the SP drivers. Reboot.

3. Download & Install latest DAO, DVD and MMC in that order. Reboot.

4. Check device manager. There shouldn't be any x's or exclamation marks.

5. Go ahead and bring your channels in and complete the initialization wizard. Start the TV. Close and reboot.

At this point everything should work. I have tested this configuration for 2 days now by running the TV constantly during background tasks, virus scans, anti-spyware scans running concurrently with the screensaver and power saving modes turned on. Performance has been great!!

Keep in mind that I am NOT a gamer so I have no idea how the Omega drivers stand up with the games. There may be a better way to do this but this is how it worked for me. Thanks everyone for their ideas as I couldn't have done it without you all.

Bad ATI support!! BAD!!!
