9800 AIW lag

Anyone help?

When I use my console game w/ my AIW 9800 I get a .5->1 sec lag that makes most games unplayable. sound and video are in sync, but they are both lagging . Seems the channel changing is slow also. I haven't hooked my xbox up in some time, but I can say for sure at one time I did not have this issue. Anyway I've read a few posts in other places, but have no solution other then try old drivers and MMC apps from ATI. anyone have any idea what I must do to play halo 2 again ? setting or driver?

Did you tru turning off TV on demand? It shouldn't lag if its in "direct mode"

Please advise. I thought TV on demand only happens when you specificlly record.

Wel it can happen accidentaly. Just make sure its not on...it shouldn't be. Turning it off eliminates lag for me

I get lag on my TV as well, but only after I play music. If I want to watch TV after i play music, regrettably, I have to restart my computer first. A weird problem, but I can live with it. I'm guessing a conflict with the audio drivers.

You are using WDM drivers from 5.2 or newer, yes? If so, then the lag is due to the new WDM NSP digital encoding drivers. The older non-NSP drivers do not have the lag as they use Analog processing. You have to go back to an older version to get rid of the lag.

Or, you can update just the Rage Theater Video NSP driver through Device Manager. Point the driver wizard to the extracted folder of the WDM drivers and go to the WDM_SP\XP folder to install the Analog version of the driver. You don't even need to reboot.

Okay, for your 9800 AIW, if you want the most trouble-free TV watching, and lag-free video input for playing console games through your AIW card, I would suggest you use Catalyst version 4.12 w/ MMC 9.03. I wouldn't use the latest MMC with that card. You can use 9.06.1 if you want, but avoid 9.08 for certain.

You should use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the ATI Drivers, Control Panel and MMC. Use the ATI Software Uninstall Utility that's listed there to remove all the ATI related stuff from your system. Before rebooting, disable your network adapter so that when you reboot, Windows won't auto load drivers.

Then, install the full Catalyst Package 4.12 w/ the WDM drivers, reboot when prompted. Then install MMC 9.03, reboot when prompted. You should already have the necessary components installed for the MMC package to work since you had done so previously. The Catalyst uninstaller doesn't remove certain things like the DAO package, which is fine.

Have your Driver CD ready in case you are going to install the ATI DVD Decoder. I don't personally use this, so I never bother to install it. I use PowerDVD for watching DVD's.

Post when you're done. Let me know if this doesn't sort you out and we'll try some other things.

Remember to enable your NIC when done.

I have done everything forward and backward. I don't know how to get my AIT and XBOX to work together, but I am pretty much done trying. Thanks to all who tried to help me...guess I need an LCD TV

Heh, sorry. It's taken me a while to get around to registering here, but I had the exact same problem you did (except mine's a 9700 Pro).

And I've got the solution; it does work - I use my PC to play both PC and console games. I run my PS2 and GameCube through the video-in. And since ATI changed their drivers earlier this year...

Okay ventura - here's the deal: do EVERYTHING Doc Zhivago said, but there's one more step, and it's the key one, natch.

Go to Ati's site and track down the driver with the name "tv-capture-wdm-6-14-10-6246v3". I can't recall exactly where you'll find it, but it's in the archived section. Once you've downloaded it, make sure you've done what the Doc said. Okay? Now, install this new driver, and reboot.

That solved all my problems (except for being locked out of the newer drivers; for the life of me I can't figure out how to do that NSP replacement thing he suggested earlier) and it's what I've been doing all year. If you try it, do let me know if it helped you like it did me!

I just installed my card today and had this issue. Little google searching lead me to this thread. I tried Dr. Z's method (below) and it worked fine! I was using files from the latest downloads (As of 12/07/05), and did not have to downgrade anything.

However....when I updated the "Rage Theater NSD Driver" in the device manager on my computer, there was no mention of an "analog driver" for that device. I simply pointed to the directory you mentioned and selected that device named as "Rage Theater NSD Driver". It updated/changed the driver, I rebooted (it prompted for reboot) and WHAMO!!! Working like a charm!!! I am now off to go play some XBOX.

See my POSTS on this WDM_NSP issue, WTF, WHY doesn't ATI address this ........... So It is THE Games Delay issue too, Hell 70% of the Posts at DH are probably related. "BIG QUESTION" are you using SP2 or DirectX 9c, I have NO luck forcing the change under them,SP1 ,NO DirectX 9c will allow it. Congrats and looks like Dr Z is Enlightened.

FYI, Cat4.12 page is the one Dr. Zhivago was referring to. If you pick the right download it should include the driver you make mention of (the "key" step).

I have an All-in-Blunder 9600 - I tried every combo (took hours!) but never went back to v4. Last v4 I had was 4.11 then I jumped to 5. I was able to download this and will try.

To those that need help getting 4.12. YOu need to traverse the driver tree on the left - Radeon All in Wonder - it shows the drivers - page 2 - you need:
XP..
> AIB
>> Radeon
>> Previous Drivers
.... NEXT PAGE (PAGE 2)
Last line on page deux...

RADEON Previous Windows XP Drivers and Software versions prior to CATALYST 5.1 / Multimedia Center 9.03

First is 4.12....

Clearly in there you can see the separate WDM driver.

All I know --- I will be building a PVR system in the future, and this will be the last ATI combo card + non-video (ie form of TV) card I ever buy from them.

Will try and report back all..

No idea if my P4 2.8 would run MS Vista ... but as sure as I am sitting here, the first thing out of ATI's mouth will be:

That is what happened with 98 to 2000.

I lightly swore not to get ATI again - and bot Matrox in 99. But figured they must be better now... years later!! Fool is me. I am so against combos in general - always some part of the combo trips up.

Actually you are not aware of another problem I had. Not what Virus program you run but the Radio tuner fails if you use Symantec NAV. You just hear white noise. The solution was to end the ccAPP task - ie listen but don't browse the net since your virus scanner has been disabled.

I am not using NAV anymore, but it is the whole theme - not stable and reliable.

The record feature - nice as it is could have been infiniitely better - ie a simple system tray icon that would record without having to launch the TV app and thus turning the screen on. (I'd come home and see the odd GPF - well there goes that tv show). I ended up using a 3rd party app to turn on the screen saver / low power for the monitor -- it would call upon the low power about 10 seconds after the ATI record would start - dual timer setups.

How many times I lost the TV Guide option - gave up on it. (some error would appear and it would then fail). Been so long that I haven't even tried again.

The delayed audio is so brutal I rarely even use it for TV anymore. We tend to watch similar programs with the TVs close - so watching mine you hear the echo. Headset doesn't help much.

Then there is the lack of improvement of this problem in support.

Everyone is different. I had problems with a 1997 generation of AIW so I haven't given them a second chance - but just have figured it is not worth the pain anymore.

I paid about $300CA for the AIW 9600 and could have opted for the 9800 (no tuner) for $450 or something. I figured the $300 was better value. But you know what? ... somehow I have found the TV side has been overshadowed with some of the new high-end games - Halo; Far Cry; FEAR - I wish I had gotten the 9800 (engine was about x2 over the 9600). $150 more would have saved me lots of grief.

As much as I hate their driver crap, I probably would buy another VIDEO card - just not another combo. When you break things down then you see perhaps "better" cards out there. Hauppauge seems to be supported by more 3rd party tuner programs - and is geared towards TV. Whereas ATI is Video with TV.

I have tried a few but many are to be desired - if you know of anything outside of ATI that works as good, if not better, I would be overjoyed to check them out...

Not 100% if you tried with 9.06.1 --- I tried it (and everything else you stated) and my 9600 is still experiencing a lag (I have two outputs - one to a speaker and one to the ATI - and they are off). The "echo" is bad enough but I have had problems with the "audio+video" out of sync.

At any rate.. I can try 9.03 (I know there are certain issues from one to another -- I need to review the differences been those two).

To fix the echo disable the playback on the line in port and mic ports... that should fix it. I had that happen

The "echo" I am referring too is not a "double" audio. It is the "out of sync" between the TV (regular) and ATI TV. They are not EQUAL.

So this AM I turned the ATI on and sure enough a large - about 2 second delay between audio + video.

So for me I conclude:
AIB9600
Cat4.12
MMC 9.0.6-1
XP SP2
--- problem not resolved.

But I will repeat using 9.0.3.....

My first clue of problems is when you change the channel, there is a slight delay in sound. Not sure if that is causing "out of sync " as well, or just not hearing sound for a brief moment.

Someone mentioned the ATI + USB sharing IRQ problem (or "observation").
No idea how I would go about changing the IRQs -- I read something about going into the BIOS. Not sure what I would do - there is a layer (ACPI or something) tha t controls the IRQs. So I can't see how anything in the BIOS would help me.

Now in theory if I could just "disable" the USBs and see if the ATI problem goes away that might be a good exercise - but not if that has zero purpose.

I don't know if USB would cause IRQ share problems, IRQ's can be shared without incident no matter what.

(1) I have installed Cat4.11 and MMC 9.0.3 - jury still out. If everything stays status quo I will be back at the latest Cat and MMC (since going that low caused no problems and staying that low might affect some game play).

Note: I still have echo (I rent a PVR unit and the program coming out is fed to a TV and ATI - same feed)

(2) Oddly - two phenomenon found:
(A) Changing the channel - you hear sound; no sound; sound
(B) Once you change the channel RIGHT-CLICK to bring up the context menu - the sound goes off then comes back ---- RIGHT-CLICK again - the sound is fine (only happens the first time you change the channel). If you change the channel and do this again, same thing.

99.9999999% sure this was not the case with XP SP1. Guaranteed to be running SP1 when I had >Cat 4.11.

And ATI seem to be numb on the whole thing. Right.

Guys... this is a known issue.... it's applying to all ATI cards from 7500 all the way up to 9800 as well... and i'm sure it's also happening to some of the newer cards i think..

It happened when they stopped using analog stereo mode and using a digital variation. (just try unplugging the audio cable from your line in on the sound card... tv audio still will work)..

I'm not sure if it's truly directly related.. but yes.... I can no longer use my AIW to say use a console on it. It's also causing major problems.... be watching TV and for some reason, it'll just freak out and lose sync with the video..... it'll even randomly lock up (My media center server runs 24/7 for well over 2 years now).

In any case.. Please post your comments in this thread that i've started.. i'm trying to get ATI's Attention to get this shit fixed but i've yet to see any form of acknowledgement!

Go to Ati's site and track down the driver with the name "tv-capture-wdm-6-14-10-6246v3". I can't recall exactly where you'll find it, but it's in the archived section. Once you've downloaded it, make sure you've done what the Doc said. Okay? Now, install this new driver, and reboot. That solved all my problems (except for being locked out of the newer drivers; for the life of me I can't figure out how to do that NSP replacement thing he suggested earlier) and it's what I've been doing all year. So It is THE Games Delay issue too, Hell 70% of the Posts at DH are probably related. "BIG QUESTION" are you using SP2 or DirectX 9c, I have NO luck forcing the change under them,SP1 ,NO DirectX 9c will allow it. Congrats and looks like Dr Z is Enlightened.
