ROBSCIX is on a distinguished road

Bought a AIW 9600XT, so I have couple Questions.

Hey guys, I guess this is the proper place for my questions. I seem to have older versions of everything on my included driver CD. How do I go about updating things like TV? and such. I have went to ATI but it doesn't provide links for such things. I probably need new versions of everything. Also has anybody got the AIW or other TV cards to work properly with KX drivers? by that I mean capturing audio and video while using KX drivers? I know how to configure the drivers fine and while I had sound while watching TV. I couldn't capture it, and when looking under settings the driver said: NO AUDIO. So I popped in creative Drivers (hate'em) and when I restarted a whole bunch of audio configuration screens came up that I never seen before. So everything works fine now. But I don't want to use these drivers! I love KX for my music and other things..but if I have to use then to have full functions of this video card then I will. I love the new video functions..

The drivers you need are at ATI's site - Drivers and Software - Windows XP - All in Wonder (Radeon). The latest Catalyst 5.9s and the MMC suite 9.08 should support your card just fine. You could also substitute a modded video driverset (the Omegadrive 5.9s are working well for my 9600XT) for the official ATI Catalyst 5.9 set. Be sure, if you want to run a modded driverset, to get the WDM file to go with the modded driver too.
.
You'd need to read/post thread(s) in the KX (Audio) forums here to find out about capturing the audio using the KX drivers...

I have downloaded ATI 5.9's as well as Omega's 5.9 which I was using prior to this purchase. What file are you talking abou that I need? the WDM file? what is the name? this has something to do with my capture and TV? I assume. As for the KX issue, I don't think it's possible. I can watch TV fine but for capturing, it just doesn't work. So can you point me to the right file to include? If I install the ATI cat's will I still need the WDM? if I grab the latest MMC does it come with a newer TV version? My MMC is fairly old..I have dial up so I have to do one thing at a time...thx for your info

Oh, ok already running the 5.9's - good. You don't need to download the WDM file - you have it installed already since you are doing capture.

What version of the MultiMedia Center software are you running now?

The release notes for the MMC software at ATI's site are pretty good at explaining what to do as far as unistalling the previous version of the Multimedia Center, and on the order of installation for the components for any new MMC you might want. Read those notes there before downloading...

Actually, I just installed the 5.9's while I was waiting everything seems fine. I think my MMC is somwhere in the 8.X series, so considering the latest is 9.X I really, really need an update. Yeah it'll take a while before they come down I am only on dial up, I don't install anything until I understand what it's gonna do. I understand the MMC is all modules so I will read up to make sure I get everything done right. Any words of wisdom for me? BTW some of my channels are a little fuzzy..a result of a couple of spliters in the Mix, so I am thinking of getting a Channel booster..little module by RCA that boost the Cable strength..Should be ok? like I wouldn't fry my coaxial input huh?..I wouldn't think so that stuff should be made to spec..Any thoughts?

It should be OK if it doesn't fry your PC but cable is crap quality these days anyway so I wouldn't worry so much

About your splitters - each splitter takes away about 3db of signal - so you can multiply the number of splitters you have in your system by 3, and that should be minimum gain level (rated in db) that you should look for in a signal booster or cable distribution amp.

Look carefully at the frequency response or bandwidth of both your splitters and the signal booster. Some older splitters and boosters would be rated at 5-500Mhz - those are obsolete. Todays "digital" cable signals now require a bandwidth up to 1Ghz, so the rating should be 5-900Mhz or close to that. BTW, if you put a signal amplifier in your system and you have a cable modem, you can lose connectivity because the inexpensive signal amplifiers pass the signal in only one direction.

Really, the best thing to do to improve your signal is remove as many splitters as you can and see if that helps enough.

Your not going to fry your tuner by supplying it with too much signal from a consumer grade signal amplifier unless the signal amp shorts and puts electrical current on the cable line - which I've never seen happen. If there is too much signal, the screen will look distorted, light or dark, flip sideways and such, but once the signal overload is removed all is generally well.

Well I can't really remove the splitters as we have kids so..I have one master splitter that send signals to the rooms, but I have the signal to the computer coming off one of the rooms. I can get a 1 cable booster for $12.99 or a four cable booster for $14.99..so I think I will grab the latter. I will remove the Main splitter from the circuit and replace it with the Signal Amp. That way by the time it hits the computer it's been boosted and unfortunley split once. SHould give me better reception than I am getting now. You seem to know alot about this Coaxial stuff, do you have any pointers as to what I should look for in a signal amp? The Amp is a RCA model has 1 input and four Outputs so I would rather use that then the main splitter. If I have to use a splitter I have to use one, what should I get to make sure I get a good signal through. I thank you verymuch for your info..
