ATI TV Wonder. If all its for is converting HVS to DVD, you don't need the HDTV stuff because no way is VHS nearly that good quality. And its cheaper. So why waste cash?
Unless he wants to do HDTV on his PC too in which case kill two birds with one stone. |

550 wich make up the card I listed above has comb filters 3 "3D" and 5 "2D" as well as like a form of AA. The image is a bit clearer or the 550 series. Side note: I'm a bit confused tho a to what the 550 Pro/ Elite / HDTV wonder have in way of differences. Also who knows in the end I may end up with this card. He might get it and just have me bother with converting this stuff VS him haveing to attept it as he doesn't know what hes doing. He neesd clear written instactions to fallow just to burn a CD Little lone to capture, edit, re encode, and burn on DVD. Not to mention hes a mr I just spent 2,500 on black friday but won't spend say $300 to upgrade his now 3+ year PC wich again I'd be betteroff with the card in my hands. Evevn if it not @ my house I think along the lines if what he could use it for after he gets this stuff converted.... Just becouse he wouldn't use the TV tuner funtion etc.. now doesn't mean he might not in the future... He ws talking about paying me to do it, I may just tell him buy me the card and i'll just do it..

lol in that case you get the HDTV wonder. BTW the combs and such are only really any good if you have a high powered PC... if he has a 3 year old junker style one he wouldn't get much good converting/encoding done. |

The key two on the 550 based cards they use alot less CPU since it has a built in mpeg2 hardware encoder. But the editing and so forth I know my phone would be riggeing off the hook or I'd be the one doing it LOL

It appears the only product available to add to a desktop PC that has the Theatre 550Pro chip on it is the TV Wonder Elite. It would keep whatever is input at the highest quality, as it does the conversion from analog to digital content in hardware - doing justice for the primary purpose you mention. It will receive standard analog broadcast and cable channels - but not HDTV...
The only hangup I would be concerned with is whether the included software allows you to save the captured video as a standalone file or something that could be used by DVD authoring software - don't know that...
