Problem when capturing from VCR with AIW x800xt

Hello guys! I´m brazilian, so the english is not so good...

Here is my problem: I bought a x800xt AIW and it works fine, I use last Omega drivers and last MMC, RW, etc...So, when i tried to capture from my Sony VCR, using the RCA cables and ATI TV, the image is very bad... its starts good (not so good), and get worse with time, until u cant see nothing... My VCR is Pal-m/NTSC (Auto), and I configured this in the software... (The VCR works fine in my Sony TV). What is more strange, is that when i capture from a Sony HandCam (NTSC only), with RCA too, it works fine!

If somebody could help, Tkx very much!

Sounds like MACROVISION..it's a copy protection device. I also had a problem like this. IF I tried to capture from a certain tape it would just keep playing same frame over and over...try a different tape or two and see if it still has the same issue... THats why that when you capture from your camera your fine. it doe not have the Macrovision. I ended up purchasing a new VCR that had Stereo and I don't seem to have the issue and more...But I would bet that your problem. Yo

I dont know... because i have tried with another VCR, much older and I had the same problem...The problem is with de VCR right? or with the tape only?
I tried these days another thing... connect the coaxial TV-OUT from VCR in the TV-IN of the AIW. Like a cable, I think.... and the AIW just recognized 1 channel, that is the VCR. In the begining the video was poor, but with some adjusts it gets better... not so good as composite, but better... In this mode, I didnt have that problem... that u thougt was macrovision...

And now? What do u think about it? there is any problem with the composite? cables?

it is built into pretty much all older VCR's in is a problem with BOTH Tape and VCR. IT IS MACROVISION..what you described is a tried and true method for getting around it!.... IF you connect it in the coaxial line it will not activate the macrovision...glad you got it figured out....COuld ALSO be a issue with cables double check them and make sure they are all clean and tight....

Hello crow182,

you can most likely solve this problem by not using the latest WDM drivers, but the older ones belonging to Catalyst 5.2 (6246v3), except for the TV Tuner driver (keep that one as it is). To do that go into the:

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - Sound, video and game controllers - ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec - Properties - Driver - Update Driver... - Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) - Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.

If you see a driver with this same name "ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec" and Version: 6.14.10.6246 in the right list, you can choose that one and install it. Otherwise you choose Have Disk... and point it to the directory which is usually in something like:

C:\ATI\SUPPORT\catalyst-[version number]\WDM\WDM_SP

Do not choose the WDM_NSP directory, but the WDM_SP one!

You can do the same with the other ATI WDM drivers except for the TV Tuner driver, depending on whether or not you want to use a loop through cable for your TV Sound, but this one alone should solve your VCR problem! You still can not record movie videos you bought in a store, but recordings you made yourself (from TV for example) will give you no problems anymore!

ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec - this is the macrovision codec? is that true? SO a special codec is loaded to mess up your video? Interesting.

MVD stands for MacroVision Detection. Well... it is not really loaded to mess up your video of course, but probably under pressure of the industry they tightened the detection, so that it now in the new drivers, as a byproduct, also refuses to display (some) normal video tapes properly. The old versions (v6246 and older) usually did not have this problem, so...

Probably not. If disabled something will check for it and stop operation

hmm...I have a newer VCR and I play purcvhased tapes sometimes on my LCD and it seems fine..before on a older VCR I was just getting same frame....over and over...then that older VCR I use it as a converter for my DVD player in the living room but guess what it has a Macrovision issue if I try to play a rented/purchased movie..so I just leav it until I can purchase a RF modulator...I am surprised that newer VCR doesn't have any issue with Macrovision...I just popped in X-Men and it play's fine in MMC....any ideas?

Why not just plug the VCR in using the RCA jacks?

Hello all,
I have been searching / reading for days now on the macrovision. I have a AIW 9800, and would like to video caputre my OWNED VHS tapes and recored them to DVD and get rid of the VCR. I have tried nero and ATI video caputer and both tell me that they (vcr tapes) are protected. When can I get this old drives (v6246) or older. I am sure there is away around this. Any information will be greatly apprecitaed.

ATI's website. Look under the AiW and look for MultiMedia Center (its software, not drivers)
