??? Installing old ATI AIW Rage 128 GL ends up always in vgasave Graphicscard

Hey,
I am newbie here - but I am here searching for help.
I have just cleaned an old W2K with updates to SP3 (english) to install a German W2K with SP4 integrated.
- It ends up, that the ATI provided Drivers don't install, because the Graphics card always default to vgasave.

One thing is changing this is: Just adding a secondary (old ISA) VGA Adapter to the system will correctly establich the connection between the AIW 128 Drivers to the Display settings.
But the WDM Drivers are still not installing, because AIW is recognized as secondary adapter.
But removing the old VGA card again gives me back my old problem.
The Driver Im trying to install from ATI is:
W2KR128513013279.exe Windows Display Driver for Rage / Rage Pro.

Is any body here, who can help me to overcame this situation ?

Remark: I have edited the Display.inf to ignore the entry for the RAGE 128 card, because the provided microsoft driver do not allow to use the MMC , or has anybody a working configuration for this ? (W2K SP4, Which Driver ? Which WDM ? Which Control Panel ? )
TIA - Thomas

How old is this system, having ISA adapters in it

I think its a case of poor IRQ handling and an old video card not supported on a newer O/S

Sad IT has worked before - when it was running W2K /SP3 English

...and I already tried to rebuild it on that level - but It shows the same strange behaviour !
And I am not the only one: It seems to be the way of the ATI Drivers expecting the system to have a plain VGA setup before the ATI Drivers will start to install.

So again the question: Is their somebody running AIW Rage 128 GL PCI succesfully on W2K SP3 or SP4 ? What Driver ? WDM Control Panel ?
Cheers,
Thomas

I gave my brother-in-law mine and it works just fine in old Packard Bell on 2k w/ sp4 using Windows 2000 Display Driver build 5.13.01.3279.
Even the mmc 7.2 works fine.

You thought about installing XP then, I think it includes these drivers by default.

A stripped out nLite'd copy of XP on that machine might be the trick

Thumbs Down! It was overloaded IRQ on that mobo

I have added a new USB 2.0 Controller Card to that mobo - which resulted in the described Problem. Removing the USB card from the system let install me the ATI Card. But I had to disable some PCI features to enable my NIC. Which results again in a very slow system.

So I ordered a 'new' PC from ebay - based on a ASUS P5A and ATX. That system can drive all the cards I need :
ADAPTEC SCSI 2940U
RTL8139 NIC
NEC USB 2.0 controller

but: ATI RAGE 128 only runs in plain VGA mode. Once the Drivers are loaded, the screen goes black.
There are some statements , that ASUS P5A and ATI Rage 128 is incompatible !?

I think, it is time again to switch the MOBO to a third choice.

Well if the card is causing IRQ problems there's nothing you can do about it.

Why not just spend the money on a newer system/video card rather than buying older systems
