Are these temperatures normal? - Playing Oblivion and getting shutdowns to desktop

During my most recent sessions with Oblivion I am getting shutdowns, but rarely. I am using the NGO Optimized Drivers. I am thinking that my card is getting too hot. Here is the hardware monitor log file from ATT:

GPU: 93.88 ENV: 73.00
GPU: 94.25 ENV: 73.00.

Could his be the reason for shutdowns. In my desktop it is idling right now at GPU 60 ENV 55.

If heat is a problem any suggestions on what I may do?

it probably a good idea to do some internal case cleaning at least twice a yearmake sure you get in all the knooks and crannies and do a thurough cleaning of your ATI fan case. I was getting high temps to back in the day before i discovered some good 'ol vaccuuming
with a straw ducted taped to the knozzle makes everything easier. its no wonder oblivion is shutting down do yourself a favor open up your case look at the air intake on the heatsink mmm hmmm

Do the cleaning chores suggested to you and also remove the fan from your cpu heatsink and thouroughly clean all the blades. Do this to your Video card fan blades also.

This may sound stupid, ridiculous, or whatever you want to call it, but a friend of mine keeps the side OFF his case and has simply cut down to size a Home central a\c filter to replace the pc side case he removed. [Keeps dust from entering the case] He then simply sit a 12 or 18 inch household fan blowing directly thru the a\c filter into the case and its components. He idles at 29-31 C with an inside home ambient temp of 77 degrees. The forced ambient air blowing in simply blows the hotter inside air out the back and front of the case.

For you serious gamers with a hot video card even after fan mods, may want to consider this when gaming.

i thought about doing that but it seemed to bulk. now a sidepanel sized fan specifically engineered for such a purpose would be dangerous but sweet.

Thank you for all the suggestions. My video card is a Vision Xstasy ATI X850XT. Right now the GPU is idling at around 50 and CPU at 54 (after reboot and having been off for over night). The video card I bought only a month and a half ago, and the PC is pretty new , bought back in December. The heatsink/fan assembly on this card is pretty good stock, right? Anyone have good experiences with after market coolers/fans? Does ATT have better controls for temperatures?

Presumably these values would be in Celcius, whatever the default value is from Ati Tray Tool.

So you have a year old pc... I still recomed you to clean it... cpy coollers do get dusty after year... trust me
if you realy want to lover your gpu temps i recomend you to get AC ATi Silencer 5 rev.2 .... My X800GTO(R480 core) idles around 44*C GPU and env. ...
And in games it's around 60*C (clocks 600 Mhz for core and 630 MHz for mem)

It looks to me like those temps are a little high especially the idle.

Could be lack of case airflow or just a dirty cooler.... what's the case's airflow scheme like?

Yes those temps seem very hot to me. I would check to make sure the fan is not worn out and reseat the heatsink using artic silver. Or best yet get one the the zalman coolers. Have one on my x800xtpe and it is quiet and cool.

If you do purchase a Zalman 700 or 900 cooler, just to be on the safe side use the below product which is completely non-conductive & non-capacitive. That way if you accidently apply a little too much or accidently get some on the card nothing will short out. You can read the reviews on the product and see how it matchs up with all the rest of their products in comparison with independent temp test runs.

I had a similar problem with my x850xt. It went away with old cat's (below 5.5 I think), but I wasn't impressed at having to use such an old driver. Eventually I went out and bought a Zalman cooler, and put that on. The problem went away and now I can use new drivers, and the system is a LOT quieter. I run the fan at 100% and can't even hear it.

Those temperatures are quite high for idle speeds. AND, the ones you posted in the first post for gaming are extremely hot.

My own system runs around 40-43 idle and into the high 60's for Oblivion. I don't believe I've ever seen it get into the 70's even.

So, I'm with everyone who has suggested a better airflow/cooling scheme.

Try running with the side case cover off and place a small fan where you can direct the air toward the video card.

In the past, before I got this present case (XION II), I even resorted to just adding case fans using brackets and placed it/them where they would force air over the video card and CPU areas.

It's also very important that the case itself have sufficient openings to allow the build up of warm air to escape. So, if you don't have a fan at the rear pulling the air out, that's a good place to start. If there isn't room for one, I'd be in the market for a case that does.

Good luck!

Thank you for all the responses! My airflow scheme is one 120mm fan in the back of the case and the power supply, an Antec Truepower 380w, has two fans: one on the bottom facing the cpu and one facing the back. The back of my tower, an Antec Sonata, has about 1/2 a foot of space from the wall. I recently tried creating a profile with ATT and will also try playing with the side panel off to see if there is any difference.

It really sounds like I need an aftermarket cooler but I don't want to void the warranty of my card since it is a Visontek and they offer that limited lifetime warranty. Also, there are other members of this forum who run stock with no problems

You could probably use an intake fan mate... try picking up a cheap 120MM fan for the front and seeing of that helps.

Also I think the Sonata has that shroud thing...nix that

I don't think that's the problem in this case... the card crashing means that its getting to hot period rather than the driver reporting temps too hot then turning it off

I should maybe trying going back to Omega's. I used them for a time and they seemed more stable than NGO's but I have been using NGO's for longer period of time than the Omega's so it may not be a fair comparison. There is one thing odd though: when I leave my comp off for a long period of then on, the temps read about 34 degs but in less than an hour they can climb upward to about 45-50 without gaming... really thinking about a Zalman at this point

Is that 45-50 the GPU or Environment?

If it's the Environment, what kind of room temperature do you run where the computer is located?

Also, if it's environment, mine runs at about 40 here with a small A/C window unit right above my system. Room temperature is kept at around 78 F at all times.

My GPU temp is currently at 45 with only the WEB browsing going on.

the temps I mention are the temps for the gpu and the cpu. There is very little difference in their displayed temps read from ati tray tools. I don't have a thermostat in my room but I would guess that the room temp is approximately 21 degs. It isn't near any windows, being on the far side of the bedroom.

I can`t afford to run my Home thermostat that low here in South Texas ! The electricity rates have skyrocketed in the states over the last several years. My ambient home temp is around 25C or 77F, and my cpu idles at 31C\88F, and the AIW X800XT Gpu idles at 41C\106F.

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/...mpconvert.html

You can d\l the latest SpeedFan Utility 4.29 here below which is free and make a comparison in regards to your CPU temp. I have never seen the CPU temp equal to the GPU temp unless your using nitrogen cooling on the vid card !!!

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

The best price I have found for the Zalman V900 cooler here in the states is below:

running my desktop, the cpu and gpu are generally the exact same temp (49 and 49 as I type this). I just finished a session of titan quest and ATI Tray Tools reports the temps to be about GPU 71 and CPU 59

Well, here's another thing about my rig: I'm actually overclocking my X800 XL a wee bit: GPU 410; Memory 515. And, even though I'm overclocking, I still don't see my GPU hit anything in the 70's during the heaviest Oblivion stresses.

If you're using the ATT app, try resetting your fan speeds higher for the various temperatures. I'd even temporarily see what happens if you simply set it to 90 - 100 % period. Maybe, just maybe, your fan is weak or not spinning freely enough to cool things sufficiently.

Well, I don`t have an Intel Prescott but I do recall folks saying the Prescott cpu runs alot hotter if `im not mistaken. I would still d\l another utility like the Speed Fan Utility I suggested and just make a temp comparison of the cpu.
