Display Problem

Recently got this system for a friend;
Acer Aspire T135 AMD Sempron 64bit 3100+ The mobo is a Gigabyte K8VM800MAE.

I bought a Radeon 9600XT 128mb for it.

I updated VGA graphics from VIA, PC detects new hardware, installed the card and plugged monitor in to it. Then loaded the ATI drivers from the supplied disc.

When I reboot I get to desktop then the screen goes black and the monitor displays "no signal". BIOS is set to Onboard/VGA and at 8x.

The card has power to it as the fan is spinning.

Any help you can give would save me from banging my head against the wall anymore.

Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven!

Sounds like you need to set up the BIOS to boot to the ADD IN AGP card. What you're essentially doing is selecting it to boot to the ONBOARD graphics adapter and you likely don't have a second monitor hooked up to that connection.

A good question would be, using the setup you have now, with the computer hooked up to the current montior, and the output connected to the video card, can you see the bootup process at all? If so, then it could just be that Windows has set the desktop resolution to something beyond the capabilities of the monitor, or has improperly detected the monitor. If that's the case then you might want to try booting up into safe mode (during bootup, hit F8, then choose safe mode), and change the monitor type to Plug and Play, or something more inline with the actual monitor that you are using.

If you don't know the exact procedure for this then this should help: go into Display Propeties, Settings Tab, Advanced button, Monitor Tab, Properties button, and hit the Update Driver button. From here choose "No, not this time" for allowing MS to automatically find the drivers (if this window even pops up) then hit next, choose "Install from a list of specific location" then next, choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" then next, and in the next window you should see 2 listings: default driver, and plug and play. Choose plug and play, then next, then follow the rest until you are finished, then reboot.

You know, reading through that problem report again (after getting some sleep!) I have to ask this:

Are you actually getting booted to the Desktop or is it the Welcome Screen?

It does sound like the wrong monitor is selected as Primary or else, as Tipstaff has pointed out, the monitor is set to a resolution and/or refresh rate beyond its capability.

I've never been able to do anything with a monitor from within Safemode, though. The monitor never shows up in the Device Manager for me.

Well, managed to get the card in and eventually it stabilised. I reduced the settings to 1024x768 as well.

I downloaded the ATI drivers from the Acer site and installed them... black screen. Restarted system and black sceen again!

I tried disabling onboard by switching it to IDE, no difference.

Can't understand it.

What monitor are you using?

I have a monitor here that does pretty much what you're describing. If the Resolution is not set properly, it will go to a black screen and 'no signal' just like you describe. Can you possibly try a different monitor?

I found this thread from using a google search so sorry for bumping an old thread but I have had the same problem. I have an acer aspire T135 that I installed an ATI 9500 PRO agp card in and a few minutes after windows starts up the screen goes black and my Samsung Syncmaster monitor flashes digital and analog. I updated the drivers from acer for ati cards but still does not work. I would like to know if a solution was found on this.

Greetings, superargo, and welcome to DriverHeaven!

Does your 9500 also have a DVI connector and adapter? Have you tried using that?

Thanks for the welcome, DS!

No, my card does not have DVI.

The mobo is a K8VM800MAE and I think that is a Gigabyte brand from searches I have done but Gigabyte does not list that as their mobo instead they have GA-K8VM800M. Anyways I looked at their driver page and they have a BIOS update that fixes sometime system instability with ATO 9600 cards and I wonder if I should try that even thogh my card is a 9500. What say you?

No, I would not recommend flashing with a BIOS update that is not specific to the motherboard.

If that's the motherboard I researched, it's an OEM board made specific for Acer systems. Have you checked Acer for any updates?

If I were working on this mobo to get the ATI card installed, I'd first uninstall the onboard display drivers, reboot, and immediately go into the BIOS and Disable the onboard graphics. You may need to change the first display to PCI or AGP depending on the choices. At any rate, select ANYTHING other than the onboard display adapter. If there's any other setting else that deals with the onboard display adapter, be sure to check it out and make sure to disable it.

Once done, Save the settings (F10) and reboot into Windows and then proceed to setup the 9500.

Good luck!
