Powercolor X1950Pro with CRT and TV-Out.

Hi.

Since I am one of the unfortunate ones having an X850XT PE without SM3.0 I can't play a few of the newer games. Hence I've decided to get me a new card.

I'm still on AGP so there aren't that much to select so to get the most out if it it's the X1950Pro I have to go for. The HD2600 series is less powerful as I've heard and I still use Win XP and won't go for Vista until I have no other choise so I can't use DX10 anyway.

The card I've found and decided to get is the Powercolor X1950Pro 512MB but I read somewhere that there is one issue with it.

As it said you can't use the S-Video TV-Out if you're using a CRT with the DVI-VGA converter.

Is this true or not? I use the TV-Out a lot so it would make things really difficult for me. Is there some workaround if it's the case?

I need to know this before I go buy it. I can't afford both the card and an LCD right now.

hmm....i haven't tried this myself. but, i don't have a CRT monitor myself either. and my TV also does not support s-video.

so, i got the right card, but the wrong setup that you are looking for.

i can tell you however, that if you plan on OCing this card, you don't get much out of the RAM of the gfx card. maybe like 20Mhz tops OC.

I wish I could be more authoritative in my answer to you. But, all I can tell you for sure is that I've used a PowerColor X1950 Pro 256 PCI Express card and had no issues outputting to the TV while also using the Adapter for my CRT. My TV does support S-Video In and there are other ways to get it to work if you decide to use some kind of Channel Tuner to the TV.

I'd be interested to find out where you read this about it not being able to do the TV Out while using a CRT.

I read it in a review on the webshop where I plan to buy the card from where the person reviewing the card quoted this:

"CRT display + TV: UNSUPPORTED CONFIGURATION if the CRT display is attached to the DVI-I connector via the DVI-I-to-VGA adapter."

Exactly where he quoted that from I don't know, he follows it up saying that more information is in the manual that's avaliable on Powercolors website. Did check that but the PDF I find there is unreadable, it's faulty somehow.

I guess if I were in your shoes, I'd contact PowerColor via their Tech Support and ask them about this. I still don't see why using the adapter would disable the TV Out. On my PowerColor X1950 there are TWO DVI ports plus the S-Video. As I said previously, I've never had a problem using the combination of the Adapter plus the S-Video output to the TV.

This is a very weird claim in my own mind. ???

I thought it sounded weird as well, that's why I asked. I'll try and ask Powercolor as well just to be safe. The store won't have any cards until the 27th so I have time to change my mind if this is true.

Don't know what to get instead though... if this is the case I'll just have to wait until I can get the LCD...
