ATi HD2900, 2600 vs X1950, X1650?
ATi's marketing name, HD- and X-.
What's the differences between these two prefixes? |

X series entails the latter of their cards......R580/R580+(X1900, X1950 series) and older, they are DX9 only.
HD series entails (R600, which is the 2900 series) and beyond which support DX10, which is their newest lineup of cards. The suffix of PRO,XT,XTX are being discontinued as well, which used to be a mainstay of the X and older series. In turn the last 2 digits of the card series will delineate what sort of performance level the card will bear, so for example the new HD3000 series coming up as the (RV670,R680) will have naming like HD 3850 (midrange) and HD3870 (highend) RV670 models. Hope this clears up some confusion

I hate technology nomenclature, over the last decade we have had 8 generations of ATi/Nvidia graphics cards, and in that time the numbering has changed with every generation, it's not hard to see why consumers get confused, it's the same with Intel with their Latter P4/Core 2 Duos, nobody outside of the people "In the know" have a clue what the numbers mean!
I wish they just kept a similar numbering system, so at least we can see exactly where their latest tech compares to the gen before.
