Crossfire X !?

Is this what all of us Multi-GPU users are waiting for?!

Is there any official information on this? From what i can gather this will support: 2,3,4 (more?) cards in crossfire? 8 monitors in crossfire? Crossfire Physics? Driver side Crossfiring? also what is the motherboard chipset for this? Is it the Intel X38? Also what cards are going to support this? is it backwards compatible to the X1950pro?

Did some reading and answered one of my questions, It should work on ANY chipset with 2 PEG compatible slots or more, even nVidia Chipsets.

Are you sure that is not the new X790 Amd chipset? I seen some pics from ASUS and they have 4 pciE slots with a main bridge to the other 2 cards and they all use the crossfire bridge that you get with the cards,Just the Mo-bo manufacture is to supply the main bridge for 4 cards.

Actually... Crossfire and any iteration of it in multi GPU configurations is the only Multi GPU config that only requires that a mobo have PCI-E slots to accompany the cards, and not proprietary drivers and the use of Nvidia's MCP's to run SLI.

SLI is only used by Nvidia, and only on their boards/chipsets, the only time this has ever been different is on the upcoming Intel dual LGA771 "Skull Trail" gaming mobo which uses 2 MCP's to enable SLI and Quad SLI.

Yes thats a picture from the upcoming AMD 790FX chipset, which it hasnt really been confirmed what sort of wacky Multi GPU solution AMD is cooking up, be it Tri-Fire, Quad-Fire, or someone even went as far to say that the upcoming R680 GPU (said to be dual RV670's on a single PCB) paired with the 790FX will be able to run "OctoCrossfire" but that seems more of a stretch of the imagination as the TDP for such a rig would be outrageous.

I'm guessing Z doesn't update his hardware profile often enough..... I'd assume quite the massive Motherboard CHANGE... considering the orginal one only provided 1x PCI-ex 16x

V8VENOM is an unknown quantity at this point

ATI have disabled Crossfire in their Cat 7.11 Beta drivers (aka Crysis hot fix) for Vista users.

Simple test:
1. Load CC
2. Check "Enable Crossfire"
3. Hit OK
4. Load CC

What do you see -- I see "Enable Crossfire" UNCHECKED! I'm Vista x64 and didn't have this problem with Cat 7.10. I think ATI need to seriously think about making just two cards work before moving onto 3 or 4. Not to mention that <5% of the games on the market can effectively use Crossfire.

It would be nice to see ATI just provide better designs that don't require the power consumption of an entire city block.

That's the way I understood it.... it comes on X790's only. Anything less (even on AMD chipsets) and you get only 2 card Crossfire.

There are motherboards that will allow various different combos of 3 - 4 card Crossfire but a few of them require every usable slot be taken up because of the dual slot cards. Some allow only 4 single slot cards and others allow only 2 dual slot, 2 single slot. But now that you can mix and match cards freely, that seems to be less of an issue I guess.

Still, it'll be interesting to see if 4 cards scale as well as going from 1 to 2 would

my hopes are high...

i'm also hoping that one of the mobo manufacturers manages to try and squeeze a set of 4 dual slot pci-ex slot setup.... i think it's manageable.. seeing as there is 8 addin slots.....

just imagine the heat and now imagine if each dual slot card had 2 gpu's per... mmmmmmm
