Seeking Help with x1650 PRO 512MB AGP
First of all I'd like to thank in advance to anyone who gives any type of feedback. I appreciate your time.
I just recently got a Powercolor ATI Radeon x1650 PRO 512MB AGP 128-bit GDDR2 for the sole purpose of playing WoW (World of Warcraft). And like everyone else it seems I'm having problems. I installed the most current Driver (7.12) and when I tried to load WoW it blinks a couple times rapidly and says, "World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3D acceleration. Please make sure DirectX 9.0c is installed and your video drivers are up-to-date." I do have DirectX 9.0c installed and the most up-to-date driver installed. I also tried using Omegadrivers, XG WarCat, 7.11, 7.10, 7.6. With the 7.6 driver I was able to get onto WoW for about 3 mins. After those glorious 3 mins were up my computer just suddenly froze . Does anyone know what's going on?

Hi there and welcome to DriverHeaven!
It's know that newest Catalyst drivers haves issues with AGP cards. So I would recommend you to test newest Omega drivers it they would work.

Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven,
First of all, there's a known issue with AGP cards at the moment. You would be wise to try drivers based on 6.11 or even as far back as 6.5. If those still give you problems, please report back. Good luck! |

Ok so I downloaded both 6.11 and 6.5 and tried to install them. I got a error saying,
"Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software." Is there anything I can do to fix this? |

Are you using XP or Vista? And, with either one, 32 or 64 bit?

Once you get Windows updated, see if the installation works then. Also, be sure to get the .NET Framework 2.0. It doesn't hurt to get .NET Framework 1.1 but be sure to get the patch for it, too. You'll be prompted about it once 1.1 is installed. I'll be off for a few hours from now. Good luck! |

I can't install SP2 because of some issues that I don't even know about. It just won't upgrade. Anyway I got a new some updated info though. I was browsing the web for any type of info and I found out that going back to 7.4 might actually help. So I tried and I received this,
"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands." Any idea what's going on? |

There are other issues then with your PC beyond just having problems installing a new video card. If you can't even update to SP2, you're going to continue having problems.
Let's go back to basics now: Give us the rundown on your system specs -- Motherboard; CPU; RAM; etc. If this were a system of my own, I'd back up any important data and do a format of the HDD and install Windows completely fresh. Then update it to SP2 before doing anything else. There have been many, many improvements made on XP SP2 that will, hopefully, resolve the issues you're having trying to install newer hardware. As it stands, your PC is 'locked in time' to a few years ago and you definitely need to get it up to date. Good luck! |

One last thing. When I do reboot and upgrade to SP2, what driver version should I use?

So I reformat and got all the windows update and I installed Catalyst 7.4. But still no progress. I still freeze up when I go on WoW or any 3D game. Any other ideas what's going on?

What I asked for above:
CPU? Motherboard? RAM? PSU? (especially, how many Amps on the +12V Rail/s?) If you're using the official Catalyst drivers with CCC, open it up and go to the Overdrive section. Unlock the Overdrive and keep tabs on the temperatures generated during gaming and 3D applications e.g. benchmarks like 3D Mark 2005/2006, etc. Now, if you completely formatted the HD, installed Windows brand new, updated it to SP2 with all the updates, you still need to get the latest BIOS and motherboard/Chipset drivers from the motherboard company. That's if you haven't done so already. And, with the specifications I asked for, how is the RAM setup? Dual Channel? or? and what are the settings in BIOS? Auto or? |
