I find that forum to have a bit of an elitist attitude but they're pretty knowledgeable folks, even if some of them are the biggest fanboys I have ever seen.

I don't know... Sapphire has been ATI's closest "ally" for ages, I really doubt that they are bad. Probably someone had a disappointing experience and then got angry even more than he otherwise would because they were supposed to be the best.

IMO, thanks to the referential designs which ATI and Nvidia supply, pretty much any manufacturer is capable of making a decent card and build quality should not be an issue (I never knew that Medion made graphics cards until I saw that my MSI 9800Pro which is still used on a daily basis in my second PC had their name printed on the PCB and then sloppily painted over in order to hide it). Therefore, I'd pay more attention to warranty, customer service quality, bundle, special features (custom cooling, supplied connectors, factory overclocks etc) and prices than the brands themselves.
