HD 4870x2.....any info ?

Just curious if anyone has any specs from the rumored HD4870x2 card ?
When will it be released ?
The single GPU 4870 specs are awesome, and I can't wait to see what the x2 card is going to produce.

if the 3870 x2 is anything to go buy,the 4870 x2 will outperform the GTX 280 in a few games while being more power efficient and costing less

i love the competition, now if only AMD could turn up the heat in the CPU field

Not that you ever see it once it's installed, but damn, I really like the looks of that.

Very understated, and elegant. Says to me, "I'm so badass, I don't have to say so. Others will do it for me"

Can't wait. I hope the GPU water blocks still work on the 4800 series from the 3800 series. The cards have been out for a week or 2 now yet the details on the fittings of the waterblocks are still sketchy. Anyone have any info?.

Jeezie, the power consumption on that one would have to be terribly grandoise in scale.

Glad to see ATI back in the game though. It makes me wonder why ATI's card sucks up so much power as compared with the GTX280. You'd think that with the sheer size of that 65nm chip ATI's part would have to consume less power.

If it comes close to scaling like the 3870/3870 x2, then it won't be all that bad, all things considered. It would definately be less than 4870 CF since not every componet is doubled like it would be in CF.

I looked at the power usage on anantech, and the 4870 is pretty decent at idle, but does use a lot at heavy load. Performance does come at a price.

You can't have a Ferrari and expect 40 mpg at 150 mph

Actually, it has been reported that the duel GPU 4870x2 card will have a 15% performance improvement over two 4870's in Crossfire.
I expect the min PSU requirements for the card will not be less than 850W

I suppose that is true.

Though 850W minumum does seem a TAD steep, for the 'average' (or even above average system). It might just be worth buying one that big for future expandability and so you're not running the PSU ragged by loading it over 80 - 90% of total capacity (which will shorten the life of the PSU for sure)

Well, looking at the anandtech review...they were showing their 4870 CF system as drawing 421W "total system power consumption" under load.

One would have to assume (altho we know we sometimes get into trouble doing that), that the power requirements would be a bit less for the 4870 x2, as it would have fewer components than 2 4870's in CF.

That being the case, then a quality PSU in the 600W range should power a 4870 x2 system quite handily.

I'm glad AMD/ATI is finally back. Like the preview says, if they can price it right, nVidia should start to worry
