X1050 AGP crashing on 3D apps
-System Specs-
Processor: AMD Sempron 2500+ 1.75ghz Motherboard: Soyo SY-K7VME-2AA4 Power Supply: Aspire Turbocase ATX-AS500w RAM: 2 x 512MB PC3200 400mhz DIMM Video Card: Norwood Micro X1050 265MB AGP 4x/8X OS: Windows XP SP2 DirectX 9.0c DirectDraw test passed Direct3D test passed Hello gurus of video card troubleshooting, I've got a problem I'm hoping some of you may be able to help me out with. I just upgraded my old 9200 to an X1050 I pulled out of a bargain bin. I uninstalled the old drives, pulled the old card out, plugged the new one in, installed the new driver, started up Oblivion and was thrilled with the improvement in graphics quality and the smoothness of animation (with the settings turned down to reasonable levels that is, I ran it through Oldblivion before). However, about 3 minutes into the game I loose video. I think "maybe it's a big in the game, it has a lot of them and it along with morrowind crash pretty regularly", so I restart the computer, do the same thing, crash again. To make sure it isn't just an oblivion bug, I also test it multiple times with Beyond Good and Evil and Neverwinternights 2, all with the same results. Thinking it might be a driver problem, I remove the stock driver and CCC, and install the latest Omega driver. Same problem. So I tried installing just the driver using the windows auto-install, as I have had problems from CCC in the past. Still no good. After spending some time on here, I try various things that are talked about in other threads, I uninstall the drivers, run CCleaner, and reinstall; I run MemTest86, and find no problems with my RAM, I set the video card so that it is the only device on its' power cable. My MoBo BIOS is up to date, and I was going to try to flash the video card's BIOS, but couldn't find one to match it. The power supply is plenty big and I don't really have much installed (A CD-ROM, 2 HDD's, Modem, Video Card, and a small case fan), and it doesn't seem to be overheating (at least not the the point that I can feel it if I hold my had over it). Any ideas on what might be the problem? Bad card maybe, some incompatibility somewhere? I should take it back and spend the extra $5 on a GeForce 6500? Any help will be appreciated! |

An Update:
It would seem that setting my AGP speed down to 4X under the Smartgart settings (Omega driver) has solved my problem, though I would still like to know why if anyone has any ideas. Both the card and the Mobo are advertised as AGP 4x/8x. |

Hi there!
That mobo has VIA's chipset so they have had some compatibility problems with AMD/ATi AGP cards running in AGP8X. Is your chipset drivers on their newest versions? |

Depending on when they last released a driver, I think so. When I get home I'll check the version on my computer against what I'm downloading right now and report back...

I go to viaarena.com for all my updates, they tend to have the latest drivers, even if beta.

Thanks for the website. They have different different chipset drivers there (listed for the KM400 chipset) than they did on soyo's website (listed for the K7VME Mobo). I'll try out the new one as soon as I get home (after a 5 hour physics class...)
