4850 cooling option

My friend recently bought an ATi 4850 and the stock cooler isn't quite up to 'snuff' so to speak and its also a bit loud. The Question . What would be a good cooler for this card? Its so new that im up in the air about what to suggest

Another option could be the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 which a lot of people are successfully running fanless on a 4850 card. In case the airflow through that perticular system is poor then adding strapping any kind of fan onto the S1 would suffice. However with a fan installed on it the Accelero S1 takes up two extra card slots besides the graphics card itself.

It's my system, I assume (I am porc14's roommate). Airflow isn't too bad at all in the system (I have an antec 900). I haven't checked the temps of the vid card yet, but I do know that the temp in my system has increased by about 2C idle due to the new card.

yeah I knew that beast was an option. That's what I have installed on my 8600 GT in a fanless oc'd setup . But yeah that thing is HUGE. putting it on my 8600 involved some interesting modding as well as removal of 3/5 of the plastic from the heatsink

I have a Zalman VF900-Cu installed on my 4850 and idle temps are 50~60°C (were over 80 with stock cooler).

Zalmans have the potential to be very quiet, but only at greatly reduced fan speed, which I suspect will leave you with the same issues for cooling. At full speed, the vf900 will undoubtedly be louder than the HD4850 cooler is by default, but if you've upped the speed yourself, that of course is different.

Yes, the VF900 fan is not silent af full speed, far from it. But you can adjust it to silent level and the temperature will be still much lower than with the stock cooler.

I'm actually amazed how quiet the 4870 is at idle, it's under 20 decibels for sure. Full load it gets a bit raucous, but doesn't suffer from heat anywhere near as badly as I was predicting. The fan noise is a relatively pleasant tone as well, so it's not actually that big a deal.

Certainly the best performing plan, but whatever you do make sure you have decent connectors for the hoses on the the card, I saw a 3870 Crossfire system almost get wrecked by that mistake when they leaked everywhere.
