Sour Cabbage is on a distinguished road

4850 too slow & cpu fan hits 100%

Hi everyone,
I`ve been experiencing a few problems with my new PC and was wondering if anyone could help me with the following issues. I`ll try to be brief.
1. The crysis performance is way below average (jungle 30-45 fps, beach around 20 fps at 1024x768 and high settings)
2. Crysis ingame menu & intro movies appear distorted, displaying lots of squares (much like a messed up extrude effect) and
3. The card is hiting 100% fan speed and reseting the system while on idle every now & then

I also have a lower fps in other games as well. 3dmark03 is around 33000 while most of the 4850 scores are around 50000+. PES08 also stutters and so on..

My specs are:

Asus P5KPL-VM with
Sapphire 4850 512mb with catalyst 8.6
Intel core 2 duo E4600 2mb cache
2x1GB Team Group xtreem dark DDRII 800Mhz 4-4-4-12
250gb WD
Corsair 520W PSU

running Vista Ultimate 32 bit

I`ve been trying to solve this for the past 10 days and had no luck so far.
I`d really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thank you in advance!
Cheers

id like to say things are alright and this is easily fixable.... but it isnt...

your card is not only overheating, it is destroying itself in the extreme heat

its probably too late to save your card, but you should increase the circulation in the case and/or buy a better cooler for the card.

can you post your case and the fans installed? i dont really need anything else

Thanx for taking the time to answer
The case model is Akasa Zen with two fans, one in the front and one in the rear, 12cm each, but i`m keeping the case open and have a household fan blowing air at it .
The cpu is around 48C under load, memory is also cool and the thing that bothers me the most is that the GPU fan goes berserk only on idle.

I think that those temps aren't so high that they could damage the card. Have you tried newer drivers from AMD/ATi?

at idle.. that fan shouldn't be turning over like that unless the card is a dud...

it should be turning actually quite slowly and be essentially inaudioable.

If your problems persist.. return it for replacement emediately.

it may just be the card itself is defective, i highly suggest RMAing it or returning to to where you got it

like Judas said, the card should be inaudible most of the time...... there probably is an issue with the temperature sensor in the chip

Very likely,
Have you made sure the heatsink is properly fixed to the card? Once or twice a card's gone crazy on me because one of the plastic things/screws on the heatsink was loose

thanx guys. I think i`ll replace it. I`ll test the new sample and hopefully get the scores up a bit.
I somehow get the impression that card always runs on idle frequences (400 core, 700 mem) no matter what the load (since the 3dmark scores i get are around 30% below average), although i can see the frequency changing from the catalyst overdrive menu, while running games, to 625Mhz and 993Mhz respectively.
I`ve OCd the cpu from 2.4Ghz to 3Ghz and gained about 10% increase, but that was all.
Anywayz thanx again i hope that replacing the card will do the trick.
