Overheating problem. Plz Help!
Hello all I have ran into a problem with a VisionTek card I put into my school computer. The card is getting too hot in my opinion especially when it starts to cause problems for other components. The card is: ATI Radeon HD 2600XT 1GB Quad pci-e; B2 by VisionTek. I have monitored the temps and they reach over 90 degrees celcius in no time while playing a game such as cod4. I eventually had to switch back to a older card because this card produced too much heat. These temps are with the side of the case off and even the expansion slots at the back of the case removed. Is there any tweak or anything really that will keep this card cooler without having to purchase anything? I really don't want to look at any cooling solutions besides stock on this machine as I am currently building another rig. Please help!!!

have you tried RivaTuner v2.11 download from Guru3D.com ?
install it, select the arrow drop down box, select the first box (pic of video card, low level settings), on new screen select fan tab up top, enable low level fan control check box, then adjust the speed of the fan with fixed option, monitor your temps and experiment with different fan speeds. |

But 90 degrees is way too much. Especially if the side of the case is open. If it's still under warranty I would RMA the card. If not, you can try reapplying the thermal grease.

Thanks a lot guys for the quick reply's. I had tried tweaking the fan speed with rivatuner 2.10 a while back with no success. I installed the card again and set the fan speed to 100% and I'm at 52 degrees celcius while idle. I will do some monitoring tonight while playing and I'll run a stress test and see what I'm maxing out at. I have tried quite a few things today trying to improve the circulation of this case so hopefully I can get it to stay below 80 without any additional cooling. I will keep you posted.
Thanks |

Just to be sure it's not being overlooked: How recently did you use compressed air to blow out the dust from inside the fan housing on the video card?
I owned a VisionTek HD2600 XT w/512 MB DDR3. It never got that hot even under the heaviest loads. |

Yea I clean it out frequently so I dont believe thats it either. After increasing the fan speed to 100% in rivatuner the fan did speed up because it is quite loud now lol. Hopefully that will help a lot. Last night I played cod4 for about 25 mins, ran 3D Mark 06 and ran a stress test application called rthdribl. The temps got up to 74 degrees celcius but that is a lot better than before. I think maybe it would get up to 80 after hours of fragging but atleast its not 94 celcius like before. Also Dyre Straits do remember what your idle temps were when you had that card?

You said that you have the side of the case off. Depending on the case, that could be the problem right there. With the side off, you have disrupted the airflow. With the side on, the airflow is directed over the card and helps get it out of the case. With it off, the flow can go anywhere it want's, and you end up with a dead air area around the card, and high temps as a result.
With my CM-690 I see higher internal temps with the side off than I do with it on, and this is a WATER COOLED system that cools the video card and the CPU. This is reading it off of an extra temp probe on my Exos 2 that I have just 'dangling' in the center area of the case.
