ATI X1550 Older drivers? Windows 98

I have a system that I dual boot into vairous OS's to either run certain programs older, test compatiably etc. Well the video card I had died so I replaced it with a X1550. However it appears that there are not any windows 98 drivers for this card. Nor are there for windows 2000. The odd thing is when I bought the card, the information listed said it was 98/2000/XP compatible. I did manage to get it working in 2000 with the Omega Drivers. Is it a lost cause running windows 98 on this card? If so perhaps I should look for a older card. Any thoughts is apprecated.

You might try the 6.11 version of Catalyst drivers. I recall something about this particular release being the last one to actually support the older 98/2K versions. If that doesn't work then I do believe it's a lost cause. Also, just in case the installation doesn't recognize the card, you can try a manual installation through Device Manager and see if that works.

Re: ATI X1550 Older drivers? Windows 98

well technically, there shouldn't be a single problem with windows 2000 as the drivers are 2000/xp compliant.

So even with the new 8.10's.. should be able to install straight away....

have you unpacked the 8.10's in win2k and then tried to manually install the driver by pointing it down through the unpack folder to the 2k folder?

Re: ATI X1550 Older drivers? Windows 98

Hmm I may give 6.11 a shot. I thought I tried that and it said my card wasn't found. I will double check that though. As for windows 2000, yes I thought it should work as well, but the installer gave me the big thumbs down. I considered installing it manually but ended up using the omega drivers instead. I think I will stick with them for the moment as they seem to be working well.

Thanks for all the info. Too bad there is not a driver that will work with win98. I guess I will need to use emmulation for win98 (if the 6.11 drivers don't work), the only problem with that it is usually slower. :/

If you really want Win98, you can buy an older graphics card that does have Win98 drivers on ATI's site, such as the Radeon 9500.

emulation is not a problem (unless your cpu is weak) untill you get into win98 3d hardware accelerated gaming

i had one of my comps win98 untill mid 2006, radeon9800pro, p4 2.3ghz, omega 6.11s or something

drivers were a lot more buggy though, & quake3 was slower

Just install XP, its going to be too much of a hassle to emulate it, let alone decent performance. I'm sure your having trouble with other software.
