??? HD 4850 temperatures here!

Hi. I bought a Powercolor HD4850 PCS+ graphics card and it runs 70C degree at idle. I guess that's too high! What are yours? (especially owners of powercolor cards)

turn on the manual setting for the fan and set it higher. As normal, the automatic system is insufficient.

That's fine. As long as the fan speed ramps up sufficiently when the card is put to work it will not be a problem. At idle it's better that the fan does not produce a higher noise level than necessary. The GPU is designed to handle temperatures even just above 100C at load without problems.

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

It seems mine runs quite hotter than yours. Is there a utility that I can set fan rpm's and gpu load? (setting it to run at 50% when temperature is 75C degree for example) 'cause I suspect that my TDR issue is related with high temperatures. When I use atitool fan runs at 50% while temp is 87C degrees. That's too hot! Setting fan speed to %90 cools it down to 78C degrees. Not much changed. Any idea?

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

I don't want to run it at full rpm 'cause it makes too much noise. Setting fan speeds according to temp would be much convenient for me. But I'm not hopeful that my tdr issue will be gone when I get cooler(!) results.

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

In Ati Tray Tools you can create a profile that adjusts fanspeed according to temperature in 10 steps but I don't know how well that works for the 4k series cards.

There's always ExpertTool as well but you only have one setting and the lowest is 50%.

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

heyy thanks. atitraytool did the trick. (new beta version supports 4850s) I just wonder other powercolor users' temps. 'cause such high temps at idle does not seem normal?! :/

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

It shouldn't idle anywhere near that high... My 4870x2 idled at that temperature, from the factory, with the powerplay bug of not clocking down the hot core after the driver booted.

After setting my minimum fan speed to 37% (it's still quieter than my system fans), my idle temp is 50 - 51*

My card is a sapphire HD4850 at idle the fan does not even spin and am at a constant 43-50 and at load the fan is 100% and the temp is around 54-63 which i think is pretty good considering that the case intake fan was off when i did thischeck.

However i have now set the fan speed manually to 70% and its fine , load 60 and idle 43

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

hmm your sapphire runs really cooler than mine. I set my min fan speed to 35% and it's 60C at idle. 10C cooler than before. But running it cool didn't solve my TDR issue. So I'm still looking for another solution.

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

Here on my Asus HD4850 512 I max out at load about 55 degrees. In idle I ramped the cooler down so the temperature delta is not that big, 8 degrees or something. At nVidia Mobile chips a big delta was enough to crash cards after a couple of time. In my opinion it's better to not strain the silicon that much by expanding and narrowing.

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

got the same problem with my powercolor hd4850 512 it worst here idle 79ºC (fan speed: 55%) load it easialy get to 99ºC+ (fan speed 90%), I was testing COD WaW everything on high and sometimes my computer shutdown probably caused due some overheat protection (not sure) :[

Kaxasa, the temperatures are way way too high in my opinion. Either too much overclock or poor circulation/case cooling.

Re: HD 4850 temperatures here!

no oc,

my case isn't that great but it has 3 fans :[ (2x front/back 120 x 120 mm, 1x 80 x 80 mm side near the processor)
everything is very well organized, ok the fans sux and do a lot of noise, but the temperatures are way too high :[
still think there's some problem with my video card or the cooler :[

I'll try to return the video card and next time I'll just avoid powercolor :/

Doesn't seem right. My powercolor 4850 idles at 44 and load at 70. Mine came slightly oc at 635 and with zalman fan/heatsinks from the factory though. Which kind do u have?
