New card, games won't load....HELP!

Ok, this is what I have ( and I should warn: I'm a real novice, so be kind)
AMD Athlon 64, 3200+....2.0 GHZ.....2.0 gigs....1.5 gig ram.......400 watt power

The vid card is a Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro, AGP

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94C4&SUBSYS_00281545&REV_00
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94C4&SUBSYS_00281545
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94C4&CC-030000
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94C4&CC-0300

I'm using the driver that came on the disc.

Here's the deal.......I've been playing "The Sims" on my old card, an ATO 1300HD. I bought COD4 and realized that I'd need some upgrades. I had a computer store install a 400 watt power unit and an additional 1.0 gig of ram. When I loaded the new card, everything seemed to load fine.

When I load either game, I get the main menu and when I select "Play", the screen either freezes or goes black an freezes.

I tried to download a latest driver but it tells me it's not compatible.
I've checked directX 9.0 and it works fine
I've checked the Device Mgr and it's showing the 2400 Pro

What's next?

Any help given will be greatly appreciated.

AMD has separate AGP drivers for the 2400 and 3000 HD series cards. They're referred to as "AGP Hotfix Drivers". For the last set of drivers based on Catalyst 9.4 head to their site HERE.

if the system freezes using the cd supplied driver.... there is a possiblity that the card is no good..

but obviously download the latest ATI radeon 9.4 AGP Hotfix drivers..

I would however highly recommend returning the HD2400pro and getting a X1650xt (better overall capability and perform a bit better without the AGP related issues alot of people run into)

Thanks for the replies. I downloaded the Hotfix and it didn't resolve the issue. I think I'll call the store today and see what they can do. I'm not sure about their refund policy.

Something else to consider would be to reinstall your chipset drivers. Which also begs the question: what motherboard do you have? You mentioned that it's an AMD system, but not what board is running it.

I'm sorry....I have no idea what board it is. All I know is what it says on the outside of the case. I've heard of chipset drivers but I don't know what they are or how to reinstall them.

I have just enough knowledge about computers to get myself in deep.

try running a tool like Everest Ultimate to tell you what hardware is inside the case

cpu-z is also extremely accurate at telling you precisely what motherboard and revision it is..... from there you can go to that motherboard manufacturers website and check to see what specs it has ....

Re: New card, games won't load....HELP!

my experience with the Nforce 3 based motherboards and AGP to PCI-EX bridged ATI cards has been poor.

I'd personally take the video card back and "try" a x16xx series ati card .... but your machine is getting a we bit dated... nvidia doesn't even acknowledge that board at all...

Re: New card, games won't load....HELP!

In the meantime, before trying what Judas suggested, give THESE drivers a try if you are running Windows XP.

First, uninstall the graphics drivers, reboot, then install the chipset drivers. After that re-run the AGP Hotfix drivers.

If that fails then I'd suggest looking at another card. You could look into the card Judas has mentioned, or go with one based on Nvidia, but you will have to do some searching to find an Nvidia AGP card (which ended with the 7000 series).
