4850X2 Issues ... or so I thought!

I just installed my HD4850 X2 and ran 3DMark Vantage after enabling CrossfireX. It crashed and locked up during the second GPU test, New Calico. Oh NOOOO! I stuffed my brand new card!! I reran the test trying different settings a few more times updated my drivers, but nothing, still crashing... I then realized that it always crashed whenever the fans started up on the card (and they're loud ones too). So I thought, "If it's crashing whenever the card uses more power that it has to be my Superflower powersupply!" At last, I turned off CrossfireX and it's running fine. Come Monday I'm heading down to my local PC Hardware outlet. Hey Jimmy gimme one of those 1500W thingmajigs...

Re: 4850X2 Issues ... or so I thought!

I doubt that you would need a 1500 W one

A Corsair PSU in the 650-850W range would do just fine. Possible even the HX620.

This one would be perfect, and give you room for expansion:
Getright Computers - Australia Buy Computer, Buy Computer Parts, Laptop Computers, Monitors, Computer Casing Online at Getright Computers have the Corsair TX-750 at AUD$249.00 inc. GST

If you wanted a little more power, just to be safe:
850W "Corsair" TX-850 ATX Power Supply

Although, if all you are running is just the 4850 X2, then the 620HX would be more than adaquate:

Re: 4850X2 Issues ... or so I thought!

how do you enable crossfirex with a single hd4850x2?

crossfire shouldn't even be showing up in the ccc...

and i'm running a HD4870x2 2gb with triple fans on a single OCZ GamerXStream 600watt... so you can be guaranteed that this psu would likely more then suite your needs considering my system specs and yours....

I have about 300AU to spend so I'll probably get what I can for that.

I've had this PSU for so long that it's about time I replaced it. I'll want something that can go for another while yet I guess. The box says it's got CrossfireX can work on "any" MB.

CrossfireX works with onboard video as well as discrete cards.

You probably don't have on-board video on your MBs.

Crossfire option appears on the 4850X2 and not on 4870X2.

Re: 4850X2 Issues ... or so I thought!

BTW the crossfire option is there since the HD4850X2 has 4 DVI ports, but they are only all usable when crossfire is disabled (first two only otherwise).

I don't know why, but when I disabled CrossFireX the problems went away. I'm seriously planning on getting a replacement card next pay.
I checked the CrossfireX forums at AMD-ATI and they said in a post that if you're sure that you have the right PSU for your card then it would most likely come down to RAM or other hardware issues.
I'm only running cheap Kingston entry level RAM and I once overclocked it and caused my PC to lock up so i'll be looking at that next now.

Re: 4850X2 Issues ... or so I thought!

Ok. I have my problem pinned down to the adaptive antialiasing setting in Catalyst 9.6. Does this sound like a hardware or software problem? Furmark ran successfully for, approx 1000 secs at 1024x768 stability test burning mode msaa 4x with this setting turned off.
