The official "I got an HD5000 series card" thread

ATi's benchmark dominating GPUs have been on the market for a while now. The first cards on the market to support DirectX 11 and have a slew of impressive numbers while doing it.

So, who has one of these next gen cards in their system and how do you like it so far? Happy? Disappointed? Or simply unimpressed?

I have the 5850 and am somewhat impressed mind you i was running a 4870X2 so it's not the same. I have to say the power management at idle is a major improvement. Everest shows 1.7A draw idle

Interestingly, Everest shows 2.32A for my primary card and 1.16A for the slave card at idle.

got the 5770 because i'm planning to crossfire (a single 5870 is too expensive and hard to find right now), but right now that i only have 1 i'm a bit disappointed. THe performance increase over the old 4850 it's too little even though crysis is now smoother due to the increase in vram. I also suspect that in single card configuration crysis2 is gonna be hard to play in DX11 but i should have the second card already when it comes out...

Don't be too disheartened. a single 5770 is pretty capable but in crossfire its a very impressive configuration.

If I was buying a setup right now, it would probably have two 5770's in it. best value for money card on the market.

Is this analogous to when AMD/ATi released the 4770 too ?!?

I've read some articles on this configuration and it seems like a viable option for folks that have the 790FX or X58 Chipset motherboards

Impressive, but the CPU is a bottle neck. Are you planning to overclock it?

20% increase is easy with that kind of CPU.

Re: The official "I got an HD5000 series card" thread

I'll wait a little more. Hopefully the rumour about better availability at the end of the month will turn out true, and maybe the prices here will drop a bit as a result. I'm itching for a new card, but I know I won't really use its features this month anyway, so won't hurt to wait.

MSI 5850 and love it, considering I went from A64 3200+ and x800xt to i7 setup. I got my card 2 weeks ago and am surprised how hard they are to find still, glad I got it when I did.

Re: The official "I got an HD5000 series card" thread

hey guys, is it possible to get audio through the dvi ports on the 5870? I'm using an x-fi card and i'd like to get the sound to both display's via dvi to hdmi cables.

I'm really liking the card so far though. Even compared to my well oc'd 295 it does very well and runs extremely cool and quiet (30c idle!). The great iq in gaming and media playback makes me not miss physx as much tho it hurts in games like Batman. I also can't believe the catalyst panel is pretty much the same it was five years ago! They need to put a little more tlc into it
Thanks for any tips on my above problem, its been a long time

I've never gotten audio to work through DVI to HDMI cables... ever....

btw... if you got an extra pci-ex port and the power.. set the 295 as an extra card.

download the glen mod, install the drivers, run the mob before rebooting.. and enjoy your ati radeon cards with physx flawlessly..

(only works in win7)

Re: The official "I got an HD5000 series card" thread

I couldn't resist picking up a HIS 5850 today. I should have waited for Sapphire or someone to get a better cooled 5850 model out, but I couldn't wait. The performance is amazingly smooth. The woosh of the cooler isn't too bad at just 20% manual fan speed and I would underclock in order to be able to keep it there, but there is also a metallic noise coming from the fan that is either related to the PWM or an imperfect ball bearing, probably the former as the fan rotates just fine. Edit: nah it's simply the bearing as it got worse and vibrates noticeably after a couple of hours. I'll be away for a couple of days and then I'll tinker with it.

I don't enjoy messing with these more expensive cards and will have a closer look at if the plastic cover can come off without too much violence, so that an side fan or similar could be used instead. If not then I'll order a Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro replacement cooler asap. I'll love this card when I can shut it up.

Addition: While waiting for the new Arctic Cooling product that I ordered I took the Accelero S1 rev2 from my old HD3870 card and put it on the 5850. It performs excellently in pair with the stock 5850 heat plate that covers the memory and some of the other chips. I tied a thin 70mm fan onto the fins over the VRM area to provide some active cooling. The temperature just reaches 70C during the HeavenMark DX11 demo. I can only hope that the Twin Turbo Pro is as noiseless at the lowest fan speed.

Re: The official "I got an HD5000 series card" thread

Well I just got myself a HIS 5770 for Christmas and soon to follow is a second one in Crossfire once I get a better board to run it all on. BTW I can tell the difference in games between my 4850 and this 5770. The frames aren't a lot higher and in some instances lower but the gameplay is smoother. Essentially, my min FPS is up and I can tell.

BTW Overclocking this particular card I have has been pretty beastly. I almost have the card completely maxed out in ATi Overdrive so I'm pretty happy with that. I tried the GPU at 990 but stability in game suffered so its sitting at 985 now without issues. The memory is basically as high as I can push it and I haven't had any stability issues with it so I think i'm going to stay at that mark.

oh that hurts, I thought ati cards could do audio over dvi too I've heard of still being able to still use hardware physx but i don't want to hack things. I'll keep the 9800 just in case though; the 295 is history
Thanks
BTW i just saw this. I have been able to get audio over HDMI and DVI-D three times now. I have it running over HDMI to my TV with my HTPC and my 4550 and then my 4850 did it with an HDMI adapter on my other computer. Got it to run on a client's HTPC setup using another 4850.

Haven't tried it on the new 5770 which I just put in as of two days ago.
