ATI Eyefinity HD 5870 2GB Eyefinity in the wild

The Radeon HD 5870 "six" or Eyefinity edition has been spotted over at pcpop.com. The card has TWICE the amount of memory (2gb) when compared with the standard model and has not five but SIX Mini-DisplayPort outputs.

The card abandons DVI and HDMI outputs for the plethora of Displayport outputs and the upper section of the backplate has been kept free for a heat exhaust system. As well as the mega memory count AMD have included both 8 pin and 6 pin PCI express power connectors and the standard 1GB version ships with two 6 pin connectors.

This will more than likely be a limited run edition as there will be a very small audience demanding six screen capabilities. Looks mega though doesn't it?

Heh, this reminds me of what Fry said in an episode of Futurama while he was watching TV, about the TV being such a high resolution that is better than the real world so no reason to go outside.

It looks cool. Not interested, but cool.

Yes well Fry said a lot of interesting things on Futurama, to me the best were the Star Trek references:

"Hey you're Spock from Star Trek, do that Hand Thingy."

Back on topic now, the eyfinity cards look interesting and here's to hoping that this kind of output connection is the way to go moving forward.

As long as the dongle connector doesn't output inferior quality signals, I'm all for a smaller connector like this, also, can these ports be hot swappable or do you have to reboot the machine to redetect what dongle adapter was just connected to the card ???

Yeah that card is freakin sweet. 2GB of RAM is awesome and all those display ports! I really would never be able to use that but kudos to the person that can I suppose . Those dongles look almost identical (down to the color) to the apple display to DVI adapter dongles.

Re: ATI Eyefinity HD 5870 2GB Eyefinity in the wild

With the price of LCD's dropping and rumors of super-thin bevels made special for eyefinity rigs, I'm super excited about this. Right now I'm already driving 3 monitors at 1080p, and I'd love to be able to add 3 more on a single card.
