Diamond ati 2600XT 256mb PCI- CS:S loses monitor signal, sounds echo

Ok so not sure what drivers I'm on, but when I play CS:S, the monitor signal will go out and at the same time, the sound will stutter or echo, but the rest of the machine is working fine.

Does anybody know what causes this problem?

I have ran ubuntu memtest and it's not the RAM as other people suggested.

xp pro legit
athlon le-1640
2 gigs ram

sounds like a graphics driver crashing mid-game..... try updating it to the latest drivers to see if that does it

Well, if the RAM isn't the culprit then i can almost guarantee that something is up with that video card. If the drivers aren't causing the error if could be a power supply issue. unless you have tested that I would recommend checking that out for issues.

I only say this because I have seen a few times that the PSU doesn't deliver the necessary power and the graphics card will shut off. how old is that PSU?

A couple years.

I don't know about the 12v rail lingo so that could be it.

It's a 500 watt ultra with 3 types of protection.

I don't see what could be drawing that much power.

The CPU draws 45 watts max, 5 120mm fans all on 5 volt, and one hard drive.

Ultra Products - V-Series 500 Watt PSU - Black - ult31841

I suppose I should also add that I've taken the stock heat sink that covered the ram chips and installed an 80mm zalman cooler that doesn't cover the ram chips. I have heat sinks on the ram chips but they obviously aren't getting as much cooling since they are only being passively cooled.

Could that be the problem?

Is it possible to underclock the cards video ram so that they don't get so hot if that's the problem?

I ran bf 2142 demo almost without any errors anytime I want.

It seems only far cry 2, CS:S, and borderlands are the only games causing trouble.
