Hi im thinking of buying a Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 do i need to upgrade anything else?

You have already a great card (GTX285), why do you mind to go now for a DX11 card? Unless you want to play the new STALKER, Battleforge and the soon to come DiRT 2 with DX11, you can wait some more months for better price or a solution from Nvidia.

Now to answer your question, you won't need to upgrade anything else. Maybe a little bit overclock to your cpu and you are ready for gaming

Yeah i was thinking of going with a Quad Core or a DX11 card. But rather want a DX11 card for many of the new games that supports it and i think ill wait just wanted to make sure it could handle it thx for the replies

More and more a Quad Core cpu is a very good thing to have for games. Performance wise you will probably lose if you get the 5850, although you will gain the DX11 option. I wouldn't upgrade the system if I were you, but, on the other hand, you could sell your graphics card and cpu for something good enough to get a 5850+ and a quad core cpu for that motherboard.

I would honestly wait approximately 6 months for prices to dip, and see what the competitive options are then, and Processor cost should also drop

Actually 5850 scores higher than my GTX 285 by aprox 10 FPS.

Thx for the idea about selling my current GPU and CPU didnt think of that one

True, but then Nvidia will have their cards out by the time a significant amount of games that support DX11, at least ones worth mentioning, will be out. Hell, seeing as how hard it is to even get an HD5850, or an HD5870 thanks to the chip shortage.. the backorder on cards is so long that by the time you can actually get one Nvidia will have their cards out anyways.

but getting the first to market isn't always the best either. When DX10.0 came out nVidia was first to market but when the DX10.0 games started coming out in force the cards couldn't adequately handle the DX10.0 feature set.

Its not so much waiting for the next big thing but waiting to makes sure the tech can handle what it is designed for and what you are paying it to do.

Then you might as well wait for DX11.1 or more before you get a DX11 card. Yes, money wise it is better to wait. But if you want to play the best that is out now with the best options, you need to get the best card no matter the price. If you can wait, you could wait 2 years after a release of a major line of cards, and by the games that were new 2 years ago now at a fraction of the price, with a very very cheap price for the top of the line graphics card of two years ago.
Can you do that? If you can, you will save a lot of money.

imo... your cpu is your bottlekneck most likely EVEN now...

i'd pop a 6600 or better yet a newer Q9xxx series quady in there..

or considering that it's quite cheap now.... a newer Intel i5/i7 1152 socket motherboard and cpu are damn slick.

Go quad of course , that is No1 priority , if you are too much into gaming , you'll find out that day by day Quad core CPU is the standard of Gaming PC and by the time it will be minimum for running games , you can get i7 /i5 to get beast performance with Hyper threading but you'll have to upgrade your M.B and RAM as well .
You can choose between best a cheap and nice option like Q6600 or throw a little more money and get Q9xxx or sacrifice your wallet for impressive i5/i7 for future proof upgrade.
On the other hand you can switch to AMD and grab Phenom II for best bang for the buck.

Make your mind and take your time.

But the power improvement over his current card is not that much, the main selling point being the DX11. If the first batch of DX11 cards are not that good with DX11 games then spending about £300 on an upgrade for a few FPS is pointless. As mentioned elsewhere, based on his requirements the money he would spend on a 5850 would be better spent upgrading his CPU.

But who said that the DX11 cards are not that good with DX11 games? Check the reviews and previews and you will see they are good enough.
Of course if you are not interested in the features or the extra visual effects, then don't buy a DX11 card, it's not like anyone forces you to buy one!

If you aren't sure to Grab Ati 5xxx card you can wait for nvidia expected release but it it will be a couple of months till that point. Another solution you might want to pick a cheap 5770 for the moment , it is the cheapest DX11 card at the moment and its performance is really nice.

There's only two Dx11 games and one of them isn't axactly pushing the boundaries so you can't say they are good enough for DX11 yet because there isn't enough evidence to say one way or the other. So upgrading from nVidia's 2nd best card to ATI's 3rd best card just because the ATI has DX11 is not advisable at the moment.

The guy's existing nVidia GeForce 285 can play all the games on the market and the 5850 can only provide graphical improvements in ONE game at this moment in time (Battleforge's DX11 improvements are performance not quality) and even then when tested with a 5870 the card's average FPS of 57 at DX10 dropped by almost 30% to 43 at DX11. The 5870 is at least 10fps faster than the 5850 on most games so it is possible the jump to DX11 based on the tests for S.T.A.L.K.E.R could push the 5850 to below 30fps on newer game engines. If that is the case then paying £200 for an extra few fps in DX10 and under 30fps in DX11 is not value for money.

At this moment in time his £200 could be better spent elsewhere on his PC.

I don't favour either company, my current GPU is nVidia and my next one will be ATI (as soon as Powercolor release their passivly cooled 5750 in the UK). I read your first post and I also read your third post about the negatives of waiting, I responded with the benefits of waiting. A conversation ensued discussing the pros and cons of this particular subject. You didn't insult me and I didn't deliberately insult you (if I did I apologise), I don't know you and its just the internet so nothing you say would take me out of a relaxed state.

If you wish to end the discussion about whether waiting for tech is a good or a bad thing then thats okay and I'll leave it there.
