4850 to a 4890?

Hello all, I don't post much here but thought I'd ask a question.

I got a 4850 last year and it has served me well. However with christmas coming up, I could easily have the oppurtunity to upgrade to maybe a 4890 or something in the price range. I am currently only running games at 1680x1050, so the 4850 is adequate. However, I am saving up for a nice 1920x1200 monitor hopefully in the near future. I play ArmA 2 frequently and that really chokes my system (e8400 @3.6ghz; 4gb DDR2 @1066Mhz) Will this boost my frames by much?

Is it worth it? Or should I just save up for a 5 series card and ask for something else for christmas

Thanks for the help.

Re: 4850 to a 4890?

a 5850 would be something i would buy over the 4890... it basically has similar performance to the 4850x2 and is not too far behind the 5870....

but its price is bound to go down in 2010...

Re: 4850 to a 4890?

Don't get a 4xxx series now unless you buy it at bargain price. You are far better of with 5770+. Arma2 support for crossfire is a bit suckyassy from what I remember from the demo, so if you are going to focus on Arma2, no reason to go for a dual gpu solution.

You also might want to focus on a fast quad core cpu...

Re: 4850 to a 4890?

I think going from 4850 to 4890 doesn't make much sense with 5800's already on the market. Also i think ARMA 2 is more CPU limited and likes quads. See here.

Re: 4850 to a 4890?

Perhaps it's best that you ask for that nice monitor for Christmas and divert the money you've been saving for it to a 5000 series graphics card (the 4850 would not be useless at 1920x1200 at all, so you don't have to upgrade the GPU first and monitor later, you can go the other way round). My recommendation would be 5850, it's a great performer and, in terms of raw performance, it will be a much bigger step forward compared to the 4850 then if you went with a 5770.

Re: 4850 to a 4890?

Better start with CPU upgrade then go straight forward to 5xxx series card depending on your budget.
Although another thing , to take full advantage of 5xxx +quad core CPU later , why don't you consider looking for 30" monitor with 2560x1600 instead of the 1920x1200 one you are going to get , just a thought.

Re: 4850 to a 4890?

I would also vote for the 5850 if they weren't so expensive not to mention nearly impossible to get. There just isn't anything on the market right now that can compare to it given the alternatives either can't beat it in performance or are even more overpriced.

I'm really hoping a 5790 or a 5830 gets released in Q1 2010.
