Cool! ATi Radeon Mobility Modded Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

Alright guys, I know a lot of people who have trouble modding their drivers in order to safely and quickly install the latest catalyst and driver for their Windows XP 32-bit laptops. I *think* I have found out how to do this properly from the last three months of modding it correctly. I will be posting updated and fully modded drivers for each release starting with November 2010. Please try to keep the thread clean and only post relevant questions/comments/concerns. Thanks.

How to use:

Instructions to install drivers:

Extract package to a folder. Go to Device Manager which can be found be right clicking on "My Computer" -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager. Then expand "Display Adapters" and right click on whatever is listed and select "Update Driver". Then select "No, not at this time" -> "Install from a list or specific location" -> "Search for the best driver in these locations", uncheck "Search removable media", check "Include this location in search:" and browse to "xxxxx\10-11_xp32_dd_ccc_enu\Packages\Drivers\Display\XP_INF " (where xxxxx is the folder which you extracted the package to). Then click next and it should detect the drivers and start to install them. Click finish.

Instructions to install Catalyst:

Extract package to folder. Browse to "xxxxx\ATI\Support\10-11_xp32_dd_ccc_enu\" (where xxxxx is the folder which you extracted the package to). Double-click on Setup.exe, select custom installation and select only catalyst.

November 2011: http://www.mediafire.com/?6dav51dqdqctcqo

September 2011: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?gl85n7ll9liumu0

Please reply with any problems you had with installing it or if you had a problem how you fixed it. This helps in tweaking the modding process and possibly adding support for a wider range of graphics cards.

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

Hi. This does not seem to contain DRIVERS, just the catalyst software. I need the driver for ATI Mobility Radeon 4225, I had to reinstall windows on my Satellite T235D laptop and I only had an XP license and now I am going crazy looking for the video driver. Most of the drivers posted by Toshiba as Win7 work in XP as well, but not the video ones.

I would appreciate it a lot if you could point me to a place where I can find them.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

Yes I forgot to mention that you have to install the drivers manually from this package.

Instructions to install drivers:

Extract package to a folder. Go to Device Manager which can be found be right clicking on "My Computer" -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager. Then expand "Display Adapters" and right click on your ATi card and select "Update Driver". Then select "No, not at this time" -> "Install from a list or specific location" -> "Search for the best driver in these locations", uncheck "Search removable media", check "Include this location in search:" and browse to "xxxxx\ATI\Support\10-11_xp32_dd_ccc_enu\Packages\Drivers\Display\XP_INF " (where xxxxx is the folder which you extracted the package to). Then click next and it should detect the drivers and start to install them. Click finish and please report back with your results.

Thank you for you reply and I hope to make this a successful thread in helping everyone install the latest Catalyst and drivers for Windows XP on their laptops.

I have also copied the instructions on driver installation to the main post.

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Modded Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

You are my own personal Jesus Christ.

I used your driver on a Dell M101Z notebook that has an integrated Radeon HD 4225. I manually added a line to the driver INF file:

"ATI Radeon HD 4225 Series" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9712&SUBSYS_04701028

And we have takeoff. Thanks a million for the mod man :-)

Hello Dansfre
Thanks for ur drivers
I used your modded drivers on my Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop and it didn't work.then i added a line for my graphic card which is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 in the related file and after that it worked correctly.I just want to know whether this kind of modded driver can do any harm on my graphic hardware(or any other hardware)or not.
Thanks in advance

Nope, no harm. The modding is simply to remove mobility restrictions on desktop drivers.

Hi all, this is my first post in this forum.

I have a new Acer Aspire 7741G with Ati Radeon Mobility HD 6550, it is not recognized from this modded driver. How could I install these drivers?

Also, I think 11.2 was released few days ago :-)

Hi dansrfe,

I really appreciate your work as I don't seem to be able to mod them myself, and I just cannot understand the reasons...
...and no, I didn't start using a PC yesterday!

Anyway, I registered just to thank you for what you did so far!

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Modded Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

Hey im new to the forums and i was wondering if you know another way to install the drivers without going to the display in the hardware tab? For me it doesn't show up and i only can see vga controller, or am i missing something to make it show up?

ATI RADEON 4250 Integerated is what i use and also want to note the drivers from drivermax works well but i can't use the catalyst control center with it and i assume this method works well and can use the CC. Hope to hear from you soon or i might just have to stick with driver max =[.

You may find useful info concerning the installation of CCC here (4th post in this thread). Note that this only concerns the installation of CCC; you still have to install the drivers with the Device Manager.

Yes CCC is installed but I need the drivers, (currently using the driver maxes custom made one) But it isn't supported. And i tried updating the drivers manually but there isn't a display adapter in the hardware. Only vga controller hope theres a fix soon but might as well keep with the one i have but if someone decides to help Thanks a bunch.

@ Everyone

I'll upload the February 2011 Drivers tomorrow.

@ Thunderboltz

Remove all the other driver stuff you have. Right click on the vga controller and update it from there. It should work.

The problem is that the modded inf does not include any definition for the Mobility 4250 card. If you still have the inf from your original driver, you may edit the modded inf to add the definition line (in [ATI.Mfg.NTx86] section) appropriate to your graphic card.

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Modded Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

Many kudos from me, too!

I picked up a Dell Zino HD 410 with the lowest specs not too long ago: Athelon II X2 P340 and integrated Radeon HD 4250 preloaded with Win 7 Home Premium.

Unfortunately it had zero hardware support for XP out of the box. But motherboard (Mobility 880G/SB820) and DVD drive worked alright and installed XP Pro without undue fuss (did have to change AHCI to ATA in BIOS first or simply faced BSOD).

The next challenge was Ethernet driver, which wasn't by any means difficult once I found out the maker (Atheros AR8151) and went to their site. Power to them for supporting XP still.

The bigger challenge, which in my mind was inexcusable, was ATI's display driver for integrated HD 4250. This is where dansrfe's "modding" shined through, at least I believe for me.

So far the little Zino HD is running XP like a charm, albeit with no sound and no "SM Bus controller" drivers. I am not worried about the sound as I don't think there is anything a USB sound bar couldn't fix and I don't need sound anyway for my purposes (otherwise I wouldn't be running XPP in the first place). What the missing "SM Bus controller" driver will hold for the system over the long run I am not sure. Time will tell.

I just want to share the following with respect to using dansrfe's mods:
  1. Added to CX111984.inf this line: <"ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 4250" = ati2mtag_RS880, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9715>.
  2. Browsing to the "XP_INF" directory on my USB or HDD doesn't work for me and it still could not locate the driver despite the line above.
  3. But installing manually from a "Have Disk" option and then choose "Mobility Radeon HD 4250" from the list works.
  4. Be sure not to bury the files too deep in a directory system as there is a maximum character length limit of "88" characters. I found that out the hard way. All I needed was the "XP_INF" directory really as I have no use for CCC. I only install CCC on my other machines with dual monitors that rotate.
Currently it is working well on 1680 x 1050. Routine browsing has no issues. Logmein works. There has so far been no instability of any sort after a half day's running.

The goal is try it on a 1920 x 1200 monitor in short order.

Once again, I just bumbled through and I am not at all sure what I did even made sense or if it was just dumb luck.

But thanks a lot to dansrfe and others who offered tips!

If you are looking for a device driver but do not know the manufacturer and/or model of this device as it is noted as "Unknown device" by Windows, you can use the following site: PCIDatabase.com
In the device properties panel, under Details tab, write down the PCI Vendor and PCI Device identifiers (the line looks like PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_yyyy). You can enter these value in the fields on the PCIDatabase main page and know the manufacturer and model of the device so it is easier to find a driver for it.

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Modded Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

Hi there dansrfe!

I'm another new guy to this forum, ended up here searching for updated drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphics card.

I was told at this thread http://www.hardwareheaven.com/mobili...et-here-2.html (before noticing yours) that ATI Mobility v11.2 drivers were only released for Win 7 (and Vista if a look is given to AMD's site here: AMD.com | Support & Downloads ) and therefore, Win XP was left aside without any latest drivers.

So, my question is, (how) did you mod these Win 7/Vista drivers to also be compatible with Win XP?
Or does AMD/ATI still provide a Win XP download for the latest drivers?

I'll try your modded drivers to see if it works in the way that I desire, updating my laptop graphics card drivers (and Catalyst), since the ones that the laptop's brand provides are very outdated (2008...) and I'm starting to have some troubles running recent games.

PS: I see that you already gave the answer for my question upthere (at least half of it):

But one thing troubles my mind before I go to installing the drivers...
Some users that posted before are referring that a INF file has to be edited to add a line suitable to that particular graphics card.

I'm not seeing if and what I should do about that, so could you explain a little better about that INF file editing (I don't know what to add in that line, if I need to) so I can edit the file and install the drivers for my Mobility HD 3650?

Just FYI, the modded drivers provided in this thread already contains the definition for ATI Mobility HD 3650, so you do not have to bother about modifying a .inf file. Just be sure to follow the instructions given in the first and third posts of this thread.

Ok, that's all I wanted to hear

I know that the latest drivers support ATI Mobility HD 3650, but I wasn't understanding what that .inf file editing story was all about...

ADDED: Yep, it all worked out fine, the v11.2 drivers and Catalyst updated/installed without any problem on my Toshiba A300 laptop with ATI Mobility HD 3650

Thanks dansrfe!

Re: ATi Radeon Mobility Modded Catalyst/Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit (Updated)

I'm getting some random BSOD related to ati2dvag.dll, sometimes multiple times a day and mostly when I'm not playing any game, just doing ordinary stuff...

It became so frequent that I was able to see the file's name before the forced restart.

EDIT: Meanwhile detected another "error", when viewing and navigating between pictures, the pc freezes for a couple of seconds, the screen blacks out multiple times and then comes back only to see the pictures chopped or with other textures bugs.
If I continue, sometimes, a message of ATI's VPU Recover appers to warn that the graphics configurations/drivers were set to default (or something like that) and to send error report.

As for when viewing videos, it "lags" a lot, just like in games (although I can play some recent ones that I wasn't able to play at all before), something that didn't happen before when using the manufacturer's provided drivers.

I'll try to reinstall the drivers, and if this persists, I'll rollback to Toshiba's provided drivers, although they are 2/3 years outdated...

Also, I'll install in short time Win 7 to benefit from more system RAM and new DirectX versions. Maybe I'll have Win 7 with modded drivers and keep the manufacturer's with Win XP, since it's causing problems, but will have to test the modded drivers for Win 7 first.

*Takes another note on why should always prefer nVidia to ATI*

I, too, have had less-than-pleasant experiences with ATI's display drivers for their low-end video cards at driving multiple monitors or a high-res monitor (nothing crazy, just 1920x1200).

Having said that, I have (or more precisely my secretary has) been using dansrfe's modded display driver for the HD4250 in the $399 (Canadian price), lowest spec'd Dell Zino HD without a single hitch for at least a couple of weeks now. The little box serves as a "workstation" for remote access into the office through Logmein.

The office monitor attached to the desktop being remotely accessed is a Dell 27" 1920x1200; and by utter necessity her home monitor has to be 1920x1200, which is currently a Dell 24". At any other resolution she gets BSOD from ati2dvag after a while (minutes to hours) or reliably at log-off or shut-down.

I swapped out the HD 3450 for an HD 3650, and then for an HD 5650 for the desktop in the office (the one to which she "logmein"s from home), and it makes absolutely no difference.

And I tested and it has nothing to do with Logmein.

I have a pair of 1600x1200 monitors in portrait mode on my desk at work, and the HD 3650 used to "scramble" colours after a few hours of work as well. I swapped it out and put in a FirePro V3800 and the colour scrambling went away.

But ... behold, both cards, too, gave me BSOD, sometimes when I log off / shut down, especially when I change resolutions to something other than native, or rotate from landscape to portrait or vice versa.

I tried a Quadro 600 (low-end from nVidia), and not once did it give me BSOD no matther how I switched orientations or changed resolutions.

Both desktops in my office are running Win XP SP3.

A few months ago I bought an HP workstation on sale for home office use (Xeon X3580); and it came with a FirePro V5700. I "smartened up" and did not install CCC, since Win 7 can "natively" rotate screens - unlike XP.

I simply obtained the Firepro V5700 driver through Windows Update, and eschewed CCC entirely. I stayed well clear of anything directly from the ATI/AMD website.

My workstation at home is currently driving both a 1600x1200 (refurbished NEC LCD2190UXp) and a 1680x1050 (refurbished Samsung 215TW) monitors in extended portrait mode.

And doing so without a hitch.

My lesson to myself is to avoid low end ATI cards and avoid CCC if at all possible.

I am sure you have googled "ati2dvag.dll and BSOD" and have seen for yourself what you are in for. Problems with that go back 10 years at least.

Every flavour of "solution" has been offered.

My hunch is that it ain't the "modding", it's ATI/AMD.

Best of luck.
