Can't install AMD drivers - Missing INF file

Windows 7 32bit sp1
Gigabyte Radeon 6850

After trying to update to newest AMD drvers I had missing INF error. And after that I uninstalled all AMD software.

I tried using cd from Gigabyte, uninstalling everything with driver sweeper, as well as with driver cleaner.

Windows installs "standard VGA graphic card" on every startup, an when I try to install driver i get missing INF file error.

When entering safe mode, and then uninstalling standard VGA driver I get another error - "Failed to load detection driver".

When I try to install drivers manually - "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it".

I also tried to reinstall chipset drivers.

I'm out of ideas.

I would first try re-seating the video card. Make sure when you tighten the screw that the back of the card is not being forced out of the socket at the back end.

If that doesn't do the job, report back.

Re: Can't install AMD drivers - Missing INF file

yeah try the whole reseating the video card.

IMO never use the CD to install drivers.. they are usually kind of a beta pre release.. something just to get the product out the door..... course it sounds like you used it as a last result so nothing wrong with trying.

Also make sure your chipset drivers are completely up to date.

If all else fails, I've experienced a very similar thing when the GPU was faulty. I couldn't get a driver to install properly...

Is this an upgrade from nvidia to ati?

Re: Can't install AMD drivers - Missing INF file

the change from nvidia to ATI since the introduction of windows 7 is no longer a problem as the 2 different driver packages aren't overlapping like they did in vista/xp/etc.

Vista is better mind you as it is better able to remove the previous adapter settings and files before installing the new one.. because of the issues that were prevailent.

Now that windows 7 is able to run both an ATI and Nvidia and numerous other different sets of video cards from different manufacturers at the same time together and keep them from "fighting with each other"..... this is no longer a real concern.

I've tried it several times personally

However, a new better question may be how much Physical ram he has, and how much ram is on the video card he is installing.... i recently ran into a machine which used a compaq/hp motherboard that was designed by apparently Foxconn, the machine whas running windows 7 32bit and with 4gb of ram installed (Maximum amount on the motherboard would read).... the motherboard and video cards with 512mb of ram and under would work just fine.. but when i installed a 1gb or 2gb video card, the machine appeared to refuse to either "boot" sometimes, and all the time windows 7 could't install even a generic driver for the video card. I had to remove 2gb of the ram from the machine for the 2gb card, the 1gb i had to remove only the 1gb of ram

The board "accepts" 64bit windows 7, however the memory subsystem or whatever still only allows a maximum of 4gb TOTAL.. it didn't have hardware/software memory remapping or the capabilities of addressing anything more, so even moving to windows 7 64bit didn't solve the issue.

So that might be another thing to look at.

It is a good question BUT.... I take this statement "After trying to update to newest AMD drvers I had missing INF error." to mean he has been running this card and just tried to update his drivers...... This kinda blows Judas's idea out of the water too if I'm reading that correctly.

No telling until the OP comes back with more info.

Re: Can't install AMD drivers - Missing INF file

Hi,

Warning I am a novice but I did build my current system

Had this problem awhile ago. It occurred after a major MS update(maybe SP1).

I uninstalled ATI drivers(to be replaced by new ATI version) using Driver Cleaner. Other users also had the problem when they unstalled ATI using ATI Installation Manager then tried to install new drivers. Windows requires a standard INF file from its system files and for some reason ATI or Driver Cleaner may have affected the generic driver or INF file .......I could be completely off base or my memory silghtly off. google and you should find that others have or had this exact problem.

My solution was to do a OS system repair which is similiar to a reinstall of the OS using my OS disk. then installed all MS updates, SP1 etc . Several hours of work. Using system restore points did not work nor did updating via safe mode///

I no longer use Driver Cleaner which I really liked (there is a mention of this issue in the Driver Cleaner forum.) and I just install new ATI drivers over the older version ..works fine but seems wrong.

I probably took an extreme solution but it worked........Like I said I am a novice and may be really off based but others also had the same problem and this seem to be the only common successful solution

Re: Can't install AMD drivers - Missing INF file

I have, for years now, just installed the newer drivers over the current ones and have rarely ever had any problems doing it this way. This dates back to the days of using Omegadrivers.

The only time I do an uninstall now is if I want to go back to a previous driver version. In that case, I'll run the Uninstaller AND, very important!, go into Device Manager and Uninstall the card/s from there AND check the box to also uninstall the Windows drivers.

After that, I reboot, let Windows re-detect and install the native VGA drivers and then proceed with installing the driver version of my choice.

Since there is so little information from the OP, I have to wonder if the motherboard he's using has onboard VGA? And, if so, has it been disabled in order to force detect the installed AMD card?

With so little system information to go on, it's like trying to shoot flies in the dark.
