Gigabyte hd6970 OC2 card

Hi Everyone,

I have been having issues with my computer that was put together about 6 months ago.

Its got an i7 2600K processor 16GB ram 4 TB disk space and is running windws 7 64bit.

My son has put some games on this machine in particular minecraft, Portal 2 and Dirt 3. When he plays any of these game things work ok for a while and then the computer will lock up and requires a hard boot to restart it. The error in event viewer always seems to be an amdkmdag error dvd_ov.

Now this card is packaged as a gaming card ans I am not running it over clocked and a simple game such a minecraft which doesnt have the best graphics on earth seems to crach the sysem regularly.

I read some forums and some implied is a dvd drive problem so I disconnected the drive others mentioned codec problems but it doesnt happen when I am watching MKV or any other video formats just when I play games.

The power supply I have is 1000 watts and the system will not crach at all its normally on 24x7 it seems to just die when games are put on.

I have rebuilt the system as a fres install just incase my son had downloaded something wierd and even in a fresh install the problem occurs.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this issue. I did a registry fix that was recommended on some forums and all that does is disable the errors in eventview but it doesnt solve the problem. I am sure I didnt pay all this money for a dud or did I?????

kust a list if some things I have done to try and fix this.
have run memtest continously over 24 hrs and had no errors so not a ram problem.

have rebuild system just to make sure no wierd driver was installed that was causing the problem.

disconnected dvd drive as it was a dvd_ov error.

checked event log and at all instances when a lockup happens the last events are dvd_ov (notice i said eventS)

had the system running for 2 weeks straight no reboot but also no games were played.

The case I have has fans to the wazzu and alarms set but no alarms go off so not a heating issue.

Have checked system status and the thing isnt running out of memory and isnt running high on cpu utilisation when it crashes.

I have even had the system running withour fail for alomost 3 weeks with windows 7 64bit, vmware with Ubuntu installed and also an instance of windows server 2003 running active directory and exchange a test environment of exchange server 2003 to try and max it out and there was no issues with utilisation or crashing. (I run my own business and had server 2003 and exchange 2003 after updating to windows server 2008R2 luckily I didnt throw the software away I thouhgt I would never have any use for it guess i was wrong

I was thinking about putting an older video card in and see if this problem goes away if it does then atleast its narrowed down to the graphocs card.

The system was specced with a large power supply.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Re: Gigabyte hd6970 OC2 card

The error is not related to the DVD drive at all. It refers to the Overlay (OVD) which exists when a video is played in a window. This video can be one you're playing from the Desktop or a video within a video game. AMD was supposed to have remedied this problem with the 11.7 drivers.

Check your Event Viewer to see if you're getting hundreds of reports showing the error. In the past, this was being reported as producing so many logs per second it was causing system locks as you describe.

Try reinstalling the video card drivers. Check for the latest available.

Additionally, here is a long list of troubleshooting steps available from AMD Support...

Troubleshooting tips that can help resolve system / game software reboot, freeze, crash issues that occur when playing game software

Hi Just an update on the issues,

Thanks for the info event viewer wasnt showing hundreds of error it would crash after one or 2 errors still happening with new version of catalyst but not crashing as often.

I have installed the latest version of catalyst and have noticed some additional issues that were probably there before I updated catalyst but I hadnt noticed it because I wasnt converting DVD but had noticed it when streaming video.

When ever I load flight sim up with higher resolution the card whines at me all thru the flight until I close the simulator and then the system goes quiet again. Also I have over 1000 DVD that I am converting to put onto my media server and whenever I run any program that converts the vob to mkv again the card starts to squeal until the process if finished, this isnt crashing my computer but the sound is very loud and irritating.

I am also running mezzmo (media server software) on the computer to stream the video from the computer to the tv or playstation down stairs and again the card starts to scream until the movie is stopped.

Any ideas guys ? the card is still under warranty and i am seriously considering RMA it back to the supplier.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Also I cant find anywhere to see what temp the card is running at and also note I am not using the overclocking on the card.

Re: Gigabyte hd6970 OC2 card

In CCC, you need to go ahead and enable the Performance/AMD Overdrive option. This does not automatically overclock the card, but it does open up the other options. One of those will allow for adjusting the Fan Control and also show Temperatures.

I also like to use PC Wizard. It's an "all in one" type program...and totally free...that allows you to see much more details about your whole system.

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

The screaming sound you're hearing sounds like the fan is getting boosted to very high speeds. OR, there may be problems with some of the VRAM on the card.

I would say that, if adjusting the fan speed doesn't get rid of this noise, you're definitely a candidate for an RMA.

Good luck!

Re: Gigabyte hd6970 OC2 card

Thanks for that Dyre,

I have had other people have issue with amd cards not necessarily this model where it makes the same sound and they seem to isolate it to a choke coil on the card that was resonating at high frequencies causing the card to emit a noise.

Does this 6970OC2 card have a choke coil in it ? From what I have been told people get rid of the noises by using silicone glue or nail polish on the coil and the noise goes.

I am not willing to do this to my card as it is under warranty but I would like to say to the guys when I return it under RMA that its the choke coil that seems to be emmiting the noise.

Any comments ?

Thanks againg for all your help

Regards

Re: Gigabyte hd6970 OC2 card

Ok Here is some more info I am converting a movie to MKV as we speak and am looking at ccc ti see card info here is what I have

- Activity is around 5% going up to 27% for a few seconds now and then
- GPU Clock 250Mhz maxxing to about 920mhz for less than a secong now and then
- Memory 1450MHZ
- Power 0%
- Temp sitting around 50 degrees celcius
- Fan speed at 47%

Enable Graphic Over drive is off

I have stopped the fans and the sound still happens so its not a fan sound.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
