Default Post Everything about R300...

Everybody knows it's coming - but when?
Everybody knows it has to be really kick@ss - but features, specs?

Six days and Matrox Parhelia will be announced w/ similar specs like this: 350MHz/350MHz core/memory, 256bit memory architecture, 20-23 GB/s, 4 pipelines and 4 TMU/pipeline, 4 vertex shaders, not full-DX9, pixel/vertex shader 2.0, displacement mapping, 40bit color space, Triple-Head, 8x AGP...

What are the most reliable specs about R300?

How about the infamous R250??? Is that still gonna go through? I wonder if ATI is secretly waiting until the 14th of May to release the R250 so it takes some glamour away from Matrox....it could happen.....

There are some rumors, still... seems to be a logical step (in budget meaning)...

Default Post R300 agains NV30

I think Orton made it clear in his last announcement: R300 will be targeted definitely against NV30 - you know, "Crush the Force!

IMHO it means if NV30 will be out around August then a month (or 2) later R300 will follow it...

Personally I do not see the R300 available in stores before November.
Hope to be proven wrong but they bloody better make sure to release it with decent drivers otherwise they will be shooting their own feet. They nearly killed the 8500 last October.

And on Parhelia, this is what the moderator at Matrox forum says about the price:
Quote:
"All I can say is that you'll have to save up more than the GF4 4400.
Allow me to be in sales mode for this. Remember that we do not depreciate the value of our own products every six months just becuase of more frame rates. Hence, your value with our card will go alot longer."

ATi will release R300 after NV30, that sucks , because NVidia got 2 products between ATi's R200 and R300 (I do hope that R250 will be released).

My point is that if ATi will not release R300 before NV30, then R300 will have to fight with NV35 (which will be released 6 months after NV30, as usual).

Default Post I want an R300 MAXX

What about this:
Dx9 is supposed to launch somewhere around August to September
Microsoft is working close with ATI in the Dx9 development
nVidia's card is also coming in august

Wouldn't it be smarter for ATI to skip the R250 and just go straight to the R300???
I mean, Who wants to buy a video card with a life-span of 4 months??? Or even less...

I say, Why not ATI releases the R300 sooner than expected and also release an R300 MAXX card at the same time!!!???
Imagine this: R300 @ $300.00 and R300 MAXX @ $500.00

Knowing that the R300 has Dual the power of a 8500, then the MAXX would be 4 times faster!!!

ATI then officially proclaims to rule the world

No more competition for 2 years.... (unless nvidia launches something similar to the SLI of the 3dfx)

My 2 cents.

I think that the r300 will come first, and then the nv30 that will win (in terms of speed) over the r300, but then ATI is going to release the maxx edition and then ATI will win... But then it could come an sli nv30... and then even a 4sli nv30.... but still I don't think nvidia will go 2 GPU's.... but it could be, interesting and fasinating.

Actually, NV30 is coming at august and R300 at the end of fourth quarter 2002 (Thats what David Orton said), but I do remember promise of ATi, that R300 will come before NV30 (if I am not mistaken...).

I remember that a ATI guy said that when DX9 appears ATI will release a card for it (r300) so I think it's going to be BEFORE the nv30, but I could be wrong.

So far I just want it to be may 14th to see what matrox is going to offer.....

I really hope ATI releases the R300 first just before Nvidia is suppose to release the NV30. Once the R300 is released and Nvidia notices that it will smoke the NV30, I hope Nvidia pulls back and stops the release of the NV30 because they would know it will get killed.

On the other hand, it would be nice to have Nvidia release their new card days after the R300 and still get an ass-whopin'. Then maybe people may relaize that ATI is for real!

100% guaranteed.

The first rule of launching new product: don't launch the flagship before summer.

What ATI'll do is press realease new technology (read: new funky names for stuff) between now and August, then launch the the first R3000-based card (with all that funky stuff) for the August retail refresh. A month or two later the first 3rd party R300 cards will surface.

Ready for back to school, ready for Comdex 2002, ready for Christmas buying season.

Exactly.

RV250 is coming on E3 but that will be a faster budget card (only 2 rendering pipelines versus R200's 4 pipes).
Plus at the end of last year ATI wrote, they've reduced the technology cycle to10-11 months - IMHO from R200 (2001 Aug-Sep) eleven months means around this year's Aug... and cards will coming in fall...

Looking at the specs of the new Matrox card, does anybody know how the R300 is supposed to compare? Better would be awesome, but I'm wondering how you can get much better than that Matrox..

I expect Parhelia will be very far from R300 or even NV30 at that time. Really...

Default Post DIII on R300!

Now we can more sure about R300:

"ATI chosen to power DOOM III™ for E3 2002

ATI's ultra- high-end, next-generation chip provides best performance and visual quality for running DOOM III™ at E3 2002

Friday May 24, 2002

E3 2002, Los Angeles, CA - May 24, 2002 - Id Software™ has chosen ATI's next generation graphics architecture as the platform for previewing their unbelievably realistic and much anticipated DOOM III™ at this year's E3 Expo.

ATI's chip was chosen because it offers the most advanced, high-performance graphics architecture to power the demonstration at E3 2002. DOOM III™, scheduled for release in 2003, has been highly anticipated both as an unbelievable game and as a true measure of today - and tomorrow's - graphics architectures. Also highly anticipated, ATI's next generation product, scheduled for release this fall, will cement ATI firmly as a leader in the ultra-high-end 3D and gaming graphics market.

"ATI's next generation hardware has an ideal feature set for the DOOM III™ engine, and at the moment is the fastest platform to run the game on," said John Carmack, Chief Technical Officer & co-founder of Id Software, Inc.

"We want users to be blown away by their gaming experience," said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President, Marketing and General Manager, Desktop, ATI Technologies Inc. "Our next-generation product will move gamers a quantum leap forward in realistic and immersive gaming. Gamer's won't just play DOOM III™ with ATI's next generation hardware - they'll live it."

Default Post Whhhoooaa!

Another Carmack interview on MSNBC dated today:

Doom III is very much hardware driven, and one of the controversies of this year’s E3 was that the game was demonstrated on the latest ATI graphics card rather than a card from NVidia.
“NVidia has been stellar in terms of driver quality and support and doing all of the things right,” says Carmack, who has been an outspoken evangelist for NVidia’s GeForce technology. “For the past few years, they have been able to consistently outplay ATI on every front. The problem is that they are about one-half step out of synch with the hardware generation because they did Xbox instead of focusing everything on their next board. So they are a little bit behind ATI.”
“I told everyone that I was going to demonstrate Doom III on the best hardware, and there has been no collusion or kickbacks or anything like that going on. Our objective is the technical merit.”
“The new ATI card was clearly superior. I don’t want to ding NVidia for anything because NVidia has done everything they possibly could; but in every test we ran, ATI was faster.”

WTF!
