Radeon 9800XT Heating Problems

Alright here is the scoop, I was playing some counter-strike when all of a sudden everything locks up. The system drops back to the desktop with an error telling me that the VPU had locked up (Hardware freeze) and that it was going to put me into software mode. So I did and I rebooted. Well on a whim I took off the side of my case and touched the heat sink, I burned my hand.

This is not good, is anyone else having this problem? I just sent a problem report to ATI to see what the heck is going on, this just doens't seem right to me.

Here is my problem report:

==========================PROBLEM INFORMATION==========================

Problem Description: *

My video card heatsink gets so incredibly hot that it literally burns my hand
when I touch it.

I have turned off the overdrive application and it still gets so hot that it
burns my hands.

I have gotten a total hardware lockup with the VPU resulting in total video
failure while playing a game and I was forced into software rendering mode on
the desktop, and I was told to reboot to re-enable hardware.

Steps to recreate the problem: *

Play a game for 2 hours, and it gets so hot it burns my hand both with and
without overdrive enabled.

It locks up and crashes to desktop automatically in the middle of gameplay.

If you are daring enough, I say remove the stock HSF and replace it with a CPU cooler that fits the dimensions and is light enough to stick on.

Check out what this guy did with his Radeon card. It's crazy~~

Well I bought it this past Friday, I figure I am just going to take it back to the store and get a replacement or a refund if they are out of stock.

That is the 7th ATI card I have purchased that took a crap on me

I bought 6 9500's from best buy and they all had dead VPU's, couldn't even go into a 3d application whatsoever. They would only run in software mode if they would run at all.

Now the 9800XT turns out the cooling fan took a crap, and since my VPU decided to lockup and crash the system, I am hesitant to call this 4 day old card top of the line any more, just going to return it.

I made the topic out of curiosity if anyone else has experienced this problem.

After paying out that sort of money for a card, i dont see why you should have to mod it to stop it from cooking.
Take it back.

Tony.

I'm curious as to what Power Supply you have.

Yeah I'm sure.

The Best Buy I bought them at had a bad batch of cards, they said every 9500 they sold from that shipment was returned for the same problem I had with them. I haven't heard many complaints about it, but what I think is they did not do a very good job of protecting those cards during shipment from their warehouse. Have you ever been on one of their trucks? Damn things are a sauna.

The 9800XT, no clue why it went bad, it just did

Just saw your post Dyre so just edited, I'm currently using an antec 400W. The 9500's died when using a 300W AOpen, a thermaltake 400W, and the antec 400W. So it was not a power supply issue.

I also tried each of the 9500's in 4 different system configurations. One was a celeron, another was a P4, one was an athlon thunderbird, and the last was my current athlon xp.

I was just an unlucky chum.

Mazuko,

Talk about unlucky. I'm really sorry to hear about your troubles.

I've had several ATi cards over the years and only had a problem with the very first one. I RMA'd it to ATi and it came back all fixed up within one week. I was very pleased with the service I got from ATi.

I thought for sure I was having a problem with my Video In on my RADEON 64 DDR VIVO awhile back. Found out it was the cable I was using...not the connector on the card.

Good luck to you. Sounds like you need some.
