nVidia's Dawn Demo - Running on 9600 Pro

I have FINALLY been able to view this very impressive demo.

The only thing is, I can't seem to get the controls working. The mouse buttons have no affect, nor do the keys. In fact, I get an error report if I do much of anything during the demo.

I haven't tried it with a R9600pro myself but try enabling FastWrites if you aren't running with it on already. It might simply be another hardware accelerated mouse pointer issue. Trying another version of the atioglxx.dll could perhaps have some effect too.

I do have FWs on.

Also, I think the atioglxx.dll I'm using is from CAT 3.7. I downloaded a 'wrapper' that made the demo work in the first place.

They seem to be pretty well hidden. I did quite a bit of searching just to get it to work at all.

I've only seen two versions of the wrapper for this demo. The second one named 1.1 was a minor upgrade fixing the eyelashes and maybe improving performance a little. I haven't noticed any driver version dependcies in between wrapper 1.0 and 1.1. If other versions exist I'm sure they would be mentioned over at the Rage3D board, but I haven't been reading there for a while.

Hopefully someone else that has actually tried this with a R9600pro can give a hint on what's up too.

I found this link:

http://www.computersandinternet.net/

It provides a totally compiled installation that puts up a Menu on the demo screen. You can select numerous options.

So far, though, if I select the Points option, the demo will crash. I haven't yet tried the Wireframe.

EDIT: This installer also has the 'alternative' views.

I tried that package a bit, a package that it seems that somebody put together in order to make a single installation of the demo and the wrapper with full options. But it didn't seem to be working quite right here. I didn't get the same kind of crash problems, but others. Problems I don't get by manually adding the famous wrapper to the standard nVidia Dawn demo. But that's on my R9500pro, perhaps it won't help doing that with a R9600pro. Besides, the ATI monkey looks just as good.

Link to an old article about the thing and the wrapper for download.

You need to put an "atioglxx.dll" from an earlier version than Catalyst 3.6 into the \bin\ folder of the Dawn demo.

Are you sure that the Ultra mode is working? (Dawn in standard mode doesn't look like much in comparison.) Here the Ultra links in the package from www.computersandinternet.net does not work properly and when I fix them the demo crashes when trying to initialise Ultra mode. Though perhaps it's tweaked for newer cards than my R9500pro somehow.

Using the installer I downloaded from the above link, all the options are working fine on my 9600 Pro system.

I'm going to put up a movie capture shortly that demonstrates some of the features of this particular installer. It's pretty cool.

Just keep in mind that my capture is from S-Video Out to Composite In and there's going to be a reduction in both clarity and filesize. The overall capture in .mpg was nearly 250 MB. I'm converting now to WMV format and it's about halfway there.

EDIT: Here's the link to the video capture. From 250 MB down to just under 10 MB. Don't say anything about the lack of clarity.

Dawn Demo Ultra

EDIT 2: Seems it's been 'cutoff'. I'll have to fix this later on.

UPDATE on Video: I did succeed in getting 16.7 MB of a 21 MB file uploaded. For some reason, my upload times out. The file is intact, but won't complete. I'm using SmartFTP Free and haven't had this problem before. Will try again later.

A valiant effort Dyre Straits. As you point out it's hard to spot details, but I think it seems like that it is actually the normal mode running there. I made two sample pictures for anyone who wonder what the two modes look like.

Ugly Normal:

Pretty Ultra:

The best way to see if you are really running ultra or normal is to drop the sliders down and adjust the oilyness of the skin. With normal mode the skin becomes a very shiny golden colour the moment the slider is touched, in ultra mode it does look just like oily skin.
