PCI Express? WTF?

I was planning on a spring upgrade to a 64-bit AMD and MOBO, and to the new R420.
Then I read that AGP is out..."PCI Express" is in. The articles I have seen around
about this re-birth of the dead slot are very vague, and offer little to no actual useful
knowledge on this.

1.)WTF is PCI Express? Also...2.)WTF is .NET and 3.)WTF is Longhorn?

Are these things all tied together?

PCI-Express = replacement for AGP slot much higher bandwidth and should see them appearing quite soon
.NET = MS programming 'environment' needed for a lot of newer programs download from MS if you need it
Longhorn = The internal codename for the next verison of Windows, not due to offically hit desktops til next year at least so not worth worrying about now.

In my experience, if you wait for the next gen this and that every time you want to upgrade..you would never upgrade as there is always something new in the pipeline. Although I 've decided my next pc will be PCI express...

Tru enough... but this is a big leap forward. Seeing that you want the R420, I think youll have a better idea on what youll get by the time that comes out. So, dont sweat it too much. All will be clearer when thats upon us.

PCI express is actually replacing the whole PCI bus, not just the AGP slot.

Check out Anandtech's explanation HERE

the PCI ex will definitely take out a bottle neck in the system, the speeds are going to be amazing compared to agp

Yep with all the new tech coming out this year, you are better of waiting til the end of the year if you plan on building a high-end system. By that time all the new goodies like PCI Express, BTX & The replacement BIOS will be out... then again you might as well wait till next spring when SATA 2 comes out... or just wait till 2006 when SATA3 comes out... oh hell just wait forever.. LOL

Ok...thanks...these little catch words and issues are more focused for me now.(spell)

I've had a computer since the old days of Dec. 2001, Heh, and have upgraded everytime a
new vid-card comes out, Higher-end CPU's become reasonable, memory,.etc.
Basically in just two years, I've totally re-built this thing twice.

Hmmm...I'm gonna do the wise thing for once, (voice in head just said "Yeah right")
and wait until this PCI Express thing either dies or really becomes something.

Will probably get the R420 asap, if there is a difference noted about AGP/PCIE and
when/where...

Also...thinking of adding a Lian-Li/Prometia...

October...November...should be more definitive 'eh?

Thanks guise for the info.

*Jeez...I'm thinking out loud on a public message board*

Gimme those pills right now Shockey-seiall...you angry little bastage!!!!!!!!!

I think i heard that the RV420 might be PCI express and then have an AGP adapter. Maybe its the other way around. Or maybe its a future card i heard of. Maybe i should stop talkng until i get some facts. yeah, sounds good.

Nope I think you herd wrong, the only thing they have talked about that I have seen is that people with pci express slots will not be able to use r420 with out an adaptor and there is a another version of pci express coming...

Well they should just make two versions of the video cards like they did when PCI/AGP cards were both still popular. It's a no brainier, and they won't stop making AGP all together because low and medium grade cards and the people who buy them will still have AGP boards for a while. The graphic card companies aren't just going to give away that money to some company that decides to fill the gap with their own AGP line..

And what about everyone's other PCI devices, all the expensive sound cards, all the ethernet, and many other types- None of those are gonna work either. They will have to bend a little and make 2 versions of things for a while, just like with any new technology.
