later i found out that on 3dvelocity the guy who tested the very same card also reached 398.....as for the memory, according to beyond3d my samung memory is rated at 350Mhz...right now it is 338 (instead of 340 like other 9800 Pros)...i was able to reach 363Mhz but I think 360Mhz was safer......however the 3dvelocity guy reached 358
here's the link
http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/sa...ultimate_6.htm

the interesting bit is that i was only able to reach 398 and nothing more even though i have an 80mm fan attached to the card which is supposed to increase the cooling efficiency....i guess this is where the R350 core comes in.....thats the limiting factor....or could it be my 425W PSU?

what if i take ur ati 9800xt bios and reduce it to my 337/336 and then flash my card.

Question for Ya.... if and when you set the core/mem speeds to XT speeds does it hang or corupts the graphics in Aquamark or doom 3 or any other game??? are there any visible artifacts or problems in games?
or is it just with ATITOOL????

if its only ATITOOL then I say take no notice.... who says the utility has no bugs or problems... I never use one program to tell me whats wrong
its like not going through major sergury without asking for a second or third opinion from other doctors.... so use as many games and utils as you can..

I personaly "hate" atitool... I was also told by OMEGA that ATI tool messes up alot of his driver registry enhancments... so I desided to listen to him and keep away from that crap.... forgive my english.. :-)

Thanks and Brgds

Flash my Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro?

I was reading through most of this thread yesterday, and think i mamaged to confuse myself even more. So thought i would post just to make sure im gonna do the right thing.

Bascially I have got a Sapphitre Atlantis Radeon 9800 pro. I just want to check that the bioses on the first page of this thread will work on my card, before I go and ruin it!!!

Card has an R350 core, RAM chips are Hynix. I only have 4X AGP on my mobo ( i know, but i really wanted one of these cards!!) I ran the card at XT speeds last night and played Battlefield 2 for about 3 hours with everything set in game onto high and Anti Analising on 4x. Ran ok, little jerky on big maps, and when there's a lot going on, but overall ok. Think i could probably fiddle with game settings a little more to get it smoothed out.
Driver settings have AA on 6x and AF on 16x.

I have an Arctic cooler (ver. 3), will be applying ram sinks. Already have an extra exhaust fan in rear of case, stock cpu cooling (P4). Have ordered a 500W psu with dual fans and when this turns up i am gooing to install an intake fan, but not sure of the position. Was thinking about putting it on the case side, at the bottom, underneath the drive bays. But then i thought that it might be better if i still put it in the case side, but further up the case, so it blows air directly over the graphics card. Which position do you think would be more benficial?

Am using the latest catalyst drivers and Redline to overclock.

Also because im only running it in a 4xAGP slot will flashing the bios still alter the voltage through the RAM?? I am hoping that it will and the different voltage through the RAM will help me to clock it up a little more AND keep game settings for Battlefield 2 on high with AA increased!!

I have dld the bioses and flashrom but not sure of what syntax to use at the command line to flash the bios. Advice please!!????!!

Erm think thats it for now. Thanks in advance.

Great thread btw. Learnt a lot just from reading through it!!!

Have tried flashing my card. So far i have used the Gigacube Lite which gave me speeds of 412/300. Which i couldn't understand why it gave me a low memory speed.
So i tried the Gigacube E-die and that gave me 412/365. But i played Battlefield 2 and after about half an hour it started to slow down dramatcially. So i clocked it down to 412/350 and all was fine, played for about 2 hrs, no artifacts or slow down.

Will try a couple of the others later, my new PSU will arrive today and i can hook up another fan to see if that will help to make it stable.

Have installed some home made RAM sinks, which were chopped down system RAM sinks, attacked them with a hacksaw but they do the job fine!!

Will post back with my results.

Just a quick question guys...

I have a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis 128MB. I have already successfully flashed this card's BIOS (using a 9800 Pro BIOS and FlashROM from a Windows 98 boot disk) and I heard that it is possible to do the same but up to a 9800 XT.

My card has Samsung memory and obviously it's capable of being flashed (as I went from non pro - pro already) but do the BIOS bin files on the first post work with my card, and will they run in Windows 98 and FlashROM like the last one I did?

Cheers,
Chris

you should take care - seems like your cooling is not all that good with your card and thats why it didn't hold the speeds..
try to add a 80mm fan directrly on to of the card to cool the rams from both sides.
and then see if it hold the XT speeds...

if you have the chance to do so - try to replace the cooling on your card to ATI SILENCER ver 3. which should fit your card if its an XT design.
and cool both your GPU and memory.., and they are not too expensive...

good luck.. and keep us updated..

p.s. use RAbit to downclock the bios file you want to use... save the bin and reflash... that way the normal windows boot will be with 412/350 and you wont need to manualy downclock every time you reboot..

I was sucessful in doing it, but I certainly need some more cooling so I've ordered a Zalman VGA cooler... I've heard they're good. What does everyone else think?

most of them will do the job its a matter of testing and finding which will give you the best results and stay stable...
you have to test for
1. stable
2. high overclock
3. best benchmark

it will take some time but its a great feeling at the end..

good luck and dont forget to update us as to the results.

brgds me972@hotmail.com

p.s.
if you have any problems with the bios files here send me a copy of your orignal bios and I'll mode it for you... (it will take a few days - holiday and stuff)

Hey guys

Just ordered me a 9800SE. I think its an official (ATI made) card, not one made by any 3rd parties. I'm told that it has 'straight memory' and is '128bit'. This was bought from ebay, any more information can be gathered from here:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Refurbished-Ge...QQcmdZViewItem

Ya I picked up a nice lil bargain, I'd like to think lol. As you can probably see, the cooling's not exactly adequite, so I'm trying to find out where I can get one of those Artic coolers, shipped to the UK. (Preffering a UK business xD.. International business can be a slight pain ).. Anyway, I'm planning to flash it to an XT, and kinda wanting some of your opinions. PC Specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (Cooled by a Thermaltake Polo 735 )
Sony Trinitron Multiscan 200ES (Atm on Radeon 9200SE @ 85Hz)
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Mobo
Qtec 350w PSU
2x 256MB PC2100. (Gah, the bane of my life. Need to replace these pretty soon)
160GB & 40GB Maxtor HDs.
48x12x48 LiteON CDRW
16x DVD-Drive

My air flow setup is as follows:

Two case fans (both at the back) take air in.
One side-case fan takes air in as well.
PSU takes air out.. I think ;o..

Thats it.. Any optimizations or requirements, that I should note.. when I poke my gfx card to an XT bios

If the card you baught looks like the one in the picture from eBay and the memory chips are L shaped (2 on the top and 2 on the right side of the GPU) then the memory interface is NOT 128bit ... its 256Bits at 128MB ram.

when you get the card - use the ATI drivers to see how many bits there are.. in the information tab under driver options.

in that case the card can be moded to a full XT if the 4 extra pipes are ok. if the card is 128bit memory bus then you didnt realy get a bargen cause its 40% or more... slower then a regular 9800SE with 128MB ram with 256Bit bus..

but don't worry... check first... L shaped memory is almost surly 256Bit mem bus..

come back and tell us when you get the info and we'll go on with the modding.

also - befor flashing use OMEGA drivers to test the 4 extra pipes ... if their ok then go on with over clocking the card to xt speeds if it holds then only then flash the card,....

brgds

Naw.. its 128bit.. Just checked * sob *..
Ach well, no chance of an XT then. What about a pro? =o.. I dont need to unlock the 4 extra pipelines. I've been running it on Quake 4, on Medium Quality (funny.. It looks high quality to me. I dread to think what the ultra high quality setting looks like lol..), and it went quite well .. Oh, it was about.. 5hrs continous play ;o.. I need to get some ram sinks for it though, and I cant find a UK site.. Most are in America/Canada, and dont ship abroad anyway. * sobs *

Hi everyone
I have an BBA All In Wonder 9800 Pro, i wonder if I flash it to XT. Would the Hercules 9800 SE to XT work for my Video Card? Thank you for your help everyone.

Nice job on keeping this threads for over 1 year.

just so you know if you dont already, there is going to be no performance or i/q increase with a straightup bios flash other than from the increased clockspeed.the safest way for the aiw is to extract your current bios and just change the name of the card and set the clockspeeds you want and that you know your card can handle.then just reflash with your modded bios.
