Pissed Graphic Corruption with 9800XT

Hi folks,

I'm having some serious problems with my Built by ATI Radeon 9800XT. Here are a few pics of what I'm experiencing:

In this image, the geometry sprung up around me...it's not supposed to be there. heh...

The trees stretch across the screen...

Graphic tearing, usually just flickering...

And, it usually all starts with something like this - plaid, checkerboard squares on the textures.

I've tried pretty much everything I can think of. I upgraded my drivers to the latest Catalyst drivers and tried the Omega drivers, using driver cleaner after each uninstall. I've tried it with/without AA. VPU and Fastwrite are both off. I upgraded my BIOS, increased the AGP aperature to 256 to match the card's memory, and I'm sure there's a number of things I tried that I've forgotten about.

I thought that perhaps it was running hot, but the card itself is warm to the touch, and runs at around 60 to 69 degrees Celsius, even after gaming, and I haven't overclocked anything, CPU or video.

The specs of my system are
Asus P4C800 Deluxe Motherboard
1 GB of DDR400, PC3200 RAM
Antec Case with 450W Power supply and 6X case fans, one blowing directly onto the AGP slot
It's a fairly new system, having built it within the past three months, and these problems only appeared recently - approx. two weeks ago. I haven't noticed any of these artifacts in other programs such as Windows, and I even used 3D Studio Max to complete an intense 3D animation project during those two weeks. But, they appear to some degree in Lineage 2 Beta, UT2K4 (only on the interface, not in the levels), and Battlefield: Vietnam.

Any ideas you can provide to fix this problem will be a blessing. Thanks in advance for your help.

Take care,
Steve

It would look like it is RMA time for your card. Check how hot it is with the Overdrive Tab right after you start seeing the artifacts. When running 3D apps, the GPU runs at its top speed, thus heats up a lot more than when running 2D apps. You could also try running your games with the side of your case off, in case you're having a problem with ventilation.

I actually bought the card at Fry's Electronics in San Diego. Maybe it was just a bad batch of cards.

As it turns out, I think it is heat related. I opened up my case and set a larger fan blowing on the card, and I had minimal artifacting in my games. The only time artifacts occurred was during scenes with a lot of particles that happened in rapid succession. Other than that, it ran fine. So, I think RMA is the answer.

Now, my question is this: I've moved since I bought the card, and I no longer have the box. Will I be able to ship my card to ATI without issue? I still have the original receipt, just no box. Anyone have a similar situation to this?

Thanks for your replies. Hopefully I'll get it worked out soon.

Take care,
Steve
